MORAGA, Calif. – The Fresno State women's tennis team competed for the third time in as many weeks last weekend as the freshman trio of Jennifer Timotin, A.C. Hummel and Jane Ellis took part in the St. Mary's Invitational at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex in Moraga, Calif. The 'Dogs competed in multiple brackets and picked up 10 combined wins through singles and doubles play over the course of the tournament.
Jane Ellis experienced the most success over the weekend, posting a 4-2 overall record in her collegiate tournament debut. The hometown Fresno, Calif., native went 1-1 in singles and 3-1 in doubles on the weekend. Two of Ellis' three doubles wins earned her the Doubles C bracket title as she teamed up with UC Davis' Jessica Walker to defeat Sonoma State's tandem of Hannah Highsmith and Jennifer Kingsley 8-4, then take down Academy of Art's duo of Taisiia Andrieieva and Kristina Gross 8-3. Ellis also teamed up with Liesl Pieters of St. Mary's in the Doubles Consolation A bracket to take down San Jose State's team of Tamara Culibrk and Laura Malsert 8-5. In the Singles C bracket, Ellis defeated Santa Clara's Nadine Del Carmen 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, then fell short against Sacramento State's Shamika Dhar 6-3, 6-1.
Jennifer Timotin had a good showing over the course of the weekend as well, also notching four wins to go 4-3 overall in the tournament. Timotin was 2-2 in singles and 2-1 in doubles. In the Singles A bracket, the Dublin, Ireland, native was first taken down by Academy of Art's Monika Stanikova 6-2, 7-5. Timotin bounced in the Singes A Consolation bracket, however, as she dominated Washington's Maryann Rompf 6-1, 6-0, advanced to the next round through a double forfeit, defeated Sacramento State's Jayden Nielsen in a nail biter 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (5) and fell short in the title game to Academy of Art's Klara Thell-Lenntorp 6-2, 7-5. In an extra doubles match, Timotin was paired with Jordan Harris of St. Mary's, and the tandem defeated San Jose State's duo of Mathilda Vidgren and Savannah Sendar 8-5.
A.C. Hummel, also making her collegiate debut, picked up two wins for the 'Dogs in the tournament, going 2-3 overall throughout the weekend. Hummel was 1-1 in singles and 1-2 in doubles. In the Singles B bracket, the Bissingen, Germany, native was defeated by Cal's Jasie Dunk 6-2, 6-2. Hummel rebounded in the Singles Consolation B bracket, however, taking down Stanford's Taylor Lallas 6-1, 6-2.
The 'Dogs were teamed up together in multiple doubles matches, boosting their chemistry while also picking up a win. Timotin and Hummel's first match together ended in defeat at the hands of San Jose State's Tamara Culibrk and Laura Malsert 8-3, but the tandem followed that with a win of their own in the Doubles Consolation A bracket, edging out Academy of Art's pair of twin sisters, Alma Thell-Lenntorp and Klara Thell-Lenntorp, 8-6. In an extra doubles match, Hummel and Ellis were paired together, but were taken down by Cal Poly's duo of Grace Olyphant and Emily Ackerman 8-4.
The 'Dogs will have a weekend off before their next action, competing in the ITA Northwest Regionals, which will be held in Palo Alto, Calif., at Taube Family Stadium, Taube South and the West Campus Courts on Friday, Oct. 19, through Tuesday, Oct. 23.
