Diamond 'Dogs sweep doubleheader Saturday over Spartans

The Diamond 'Dogs improve to 3-0 for the third time in four seasons and go for the series sweep over Michigan State on Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m.
"It was a great team effort today by everyone, offensively, defensively and pitching-wise," said head coach Mike Batesole after the game. "If we can continue to play like that and get contributions from everyone, we will be able to make some noise."
Fresno State stays perfect on the season and improves to 3-0 to start a season for the third time in the last four season and the fifth time in Coach Batesole's tenure.
The Bulldogs combined for 24 hits between the two games while the 'Dogs pitching staff was able to limit the Spartans to five runs and 13 hits. Senior shortstop Korby Batesole tied his career-high with four hits in game one, including a triple, matched his career-best with three runs scored and drove in an RBI.
Four other Bulldogs had hits in each game as Zach Ashford, Carter Bins, JT Arruda and Nick Warren combined for 14 hits between the two games, including two doubles and two home runs. Bins and Arruda combined to drive in eight of the 'Dogs nine runs in game one as each tallied four RBIs.
Redshirt freshman Oscar Carvajal, making his first career appearance on the mound for the 'Dogs, picked up the win in game one throwing five scoreless innings while allowing three hits, one walk and striking out six. Junior right-handed pitcher and Preseason All-MW selection Edgar Gonzalez got the start in the second game and tossed seven innings allowing five hits, one run and struck out seven for the win.
How it Happend Game 1
Taking a quick early 2-0 lead, the 'Dogs got after Spartan starting pitcher Jake Lowery as Batesole got on with a single and two batters later, Arruda followed with his first career home run lifting a drive to right-center. With an early cushion, Carvajal was able to settle in and retire the Spartans in order in the second and third innings.
The Bulldogs added to the lead in the fourth as Ashford and Batesole each hit singles and Bins continued the hot offense sending a three-run home run over the left field wall and pushing the 'Dogs out in front 5-0. Working his final inning on the mound, Carvajal was able to escape a bases-loaded jam in the top of the fifth with a strikeout to keep the shutout in tact.
A three-run bottom of the frame for Fresno State put the game out of reach for the Spartans as the 'Dogs collected five hits, including three for extra-bases, as Batesole, Bins and Arruda each had RBI hits.
Michigan State scored four runs over the final three innings off Bulldog relievers, but it wasn't enough to threaten the 'Dogs. The 'Dogs went for 18 hits in game, its most since May 9, 2017 when they tallied 20 versus Sacramento State.
How it Happened Game 2
The nightcap had a much different vibe than game one as it turned into a pitcher's dual between Gonzalez of Fresno State and Ethan Landon of Michigan State.
Scoreless through the first five and half innings of the game, the 'Dogs finally broke through for its lone two runs of the contest in the bottom of the sixth. With only four hits through the first five innings against Landon, back-to-back one-out singles by Bins and Arruda put runners at the corners for outfielder McCarthy Tatum.
Tatum laid down a perfectly-placed sacrifice bunt to drive home Bins for the game's first run. Freshman designated hitter Zach Presno followed with a grounder to second, but the Spartan first baseman was unable to hold on for the out allowing Arruda to score what turned out to be the eventual game-winning run.
A run by Michigan State in the top of the seventh, the first run scored by the Spartans off a Bulldog starter all series, made it a 2-1 game, but Gonzalez was able to strand Dan Chmielewski at third leaving the tying run 90 feet away.
The Spartans again threatened in the eighth inning off redshirt senior southpaw JJ Santa Cruz putting runners at second and third with two outs, but the Bulldog hurler was able to strikeout center fielder Danny Gleaves to escape unscathed. A perfect ninth inning by redshirt sophomore Ryan Sullivan, making his first appearance since 2016, sealed the win and gave him his first career save.
Notes
- Auston Chastain, Nolan Dempsey, Emilio Nogales, Eddie Pena, Carvajal and Chad Wilson all made their Bulldog debuts in game one. Dempsey scored a run, Nogales smacked a double and Wilson notched a strikeout.
- It was Batesole's fifth career triple.
- Bins smacked his seventh career home run and set a new career-high with four RBIs in game one.
- All eight Bulldog pitchers used between the two games recorded at least one strikeout.
- The 'Dogs are now 32-17 all-time against Big Ten opponents and 22-8 in Batesole's tenure.
