The Diamond 'Dogs are off to a 4-0 start to the season after completing a four-game sweep of Big Ten foe Michigan State on Sunday with a 5-4 win. The 'Dogs are back home next weekend for a four-game series against Houston Baptist Friday through Sunday.
With the win, the Diamond 'Dogs improve to 4-0 on the season and sweep their first four-game series since taking a four-game series at home over Youngstown State in 2016.
The 'Dogs finished with 10 hits by seven different players as Bins led the way offensively matching his career-high with three hits and added two RBIs and a run.
Redshirt freshman third baseman JT Arruda added his second home run of the season and McCarthy Tatum and Jeremiah Burks added doubles as the 'Dogs tallied 42 hits as a team in the four-game set.
Freshman left-hander Jaime Arias made his first career start on the mound tossing five innings allowing five hits, two runs and struck out five. Three Bulldog relievers worked the final four innings as redshirt sophomore Ryan Sullivan collected his first career win throwing scoreless seventh and eighth innings.
How It Happened
With Arias getting off to a rocky start in his Bulldog debut, Spartan third baseman Marty Bechina took Arias deep to left field in the top of the first to give MSU an early 2-0 lead.
The 'Dogs quickly had an answer in the bottom half as Bins shot a liner up the middle for an RBI single, and one hitter later, Arruda sent one way over the right field wall to give Fresno State a 3-2 lead after one.
After an exciting first inning, the teams settled down before the Bulldog offense struck again in the the bottom of the fourth as Burks smoked an RBI single through the left side to extend the Bulldog lead to 4-2.
Arias locked in after a rough first tossing four scoreless innings in a row making his exit after five innings as freshman Chad Wilson came on in relief in the top of the sixth.
Wilson ran into immediate trouble in his first inning of work as he gave up a double and a two-run home run to Zack McGuire, which tied the game up at 4-4.
In the bottom of the seventh, senior shortstop Korby Batesole singled into left with two outs as Bins followed him rocketing one into the left-field corner to score Batesole all the way from first and push the 'Dogs out in front 5-4.
Sullivan worked a spotless eighth inning giving way to freshman Jamison Hill in the ninth and the 'Dogs winning pitcher on Friday night worked a scoreless frame to pick up his first career save.
Quotables
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On how the 'Dogs competed today.....
"You saw the freshman come out today and make adjustments. It is easy to forgot who you are and Jaime is a great location pitcher and early on tried to be a power pitcher. Once he settled down, he was outstanding and to be able to get a freshman to make an in-game adjustment like that in his first career appearance shows you that we might have something special on our hands."
On JT Arruda being ready for college baseball as a freshman....
"He is a championship-level player ending the season five straight years in high school on a win and he certainly showed he is ready to play. Last year was a weird year with us being so old most years he would have been starting as a freshman, but he redshirts and then goes up to Alaska this summer and hits .359 in a tough league, so we knew he would be ready for this stage."
Notes
- It is the third time in the Batesole era, since 2003, the 'Dogs have started a season 4-0 or better joining 2011 (6-0) & 2016 (11-0).
- Bulldog starting pitchers combined to toss 24.0 innings in the series allowing a combined 15 hits and three earned runs while striking out 23.
- The 'Dogs won three one-run games in the series starting the season 3-0 in such-games a year after going 5-7 in that department.
- Redshirt sophomore outfielder Austin White made his first career start finishing 0-for-2.
Up next
The 'Dogs return to action on Wednesday afternoon for their lone road game in their first nine games of the season taking a trip to UC Santa Barbara (0-3). First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. from Cesar Uyeska Stadium.
