Fresno State drops pair of one-goal games on Day 1 of Aggie Shootout

DAVIS, Calif. – Fresno State water polo began its weekend at the Aggie Shootout with matchups against Cal State East Bay and Santa Clara on Saturday. Both games came down to the wire, but the Bulldogs unfortunately came out on the losing end to the Pioneers by a score of 9-8, and the Broncos by a score of 7-6.
Callie Woodruff led the offense with four goals on the day, while Claire Schade dished out five assists and Emily Nicholson drew six exclusions.
Game 1: vs. Cal State East Bay
Cal State East Bay got on the board first with a goal by Leilani Vasquez at the 4:55 mark of the opening period. The Bulldogs would strike back with three consecutive scores from Isabella Magno, Callie Woodruff and Maddie Loggins to take a 3-1 lead going into the second.
The Pioneers scored twice in the early minutes of the second period to tie it up at 3-3 with just under three minutes remaining in the half. Maci Layne later countered with a goal for Fresno State off a nice feed from Claire Schade to give the 'Dogs a 4-3 advantage at the break.
It was more back-and-forth in the second half. Cal State East Bay scored three consecutive goals to open the third period as the Pioneers took a 6-4 lead. Callie Woodruff poured in the lone Bulldog score of the quarter off another Schade assist. CSUEB would score once more with 1:59 remaining in the third to take a 7-5 lead into the fourth period.
Jillian Gross and Sydney Coachman tallied goals for Fresno State early on in the fourth to tie the game up at 7-7 with 5:20 remaining in the game. But once again, Cal State East Bay had a response as they scored twice to take a 9-7 lead with 4:38 left. Natalie Espinoza would score for the Bulldogs with 53 seconds remaining to pull the 'Dogs within one. Fresno State had the ball and a chance to tie it with 19 seconds left, but the Bulldogs were unable to convert in the final seconds as the Pioneers escaped with a 9-8 victory.
Game 2: vs. Santa Clara
The Broncos controlled the opening period. SCU scored four times and held Fresno State scoreless to take a 4-0 lead into the second period.
The Bulldogs bounced back in the second as they outscored Santa Clara 3-0. Claire Schade, Callie Woodruff and Emily Nicholson all tallied goals for the 'Dogs as the score stood at 4-3 in favor of the Broncos at the break.
Callie Woodruff opened the scoring in the second half with a goal, her second of the game, at the halfway mark of the third period. SCU responded with a score by Kelly Frumkin which gave the Broncos a 5-4 advantage. Natalie Espinoza converted on a power play with just 37 second remaining in the quarter to make it a 5-5 game heading into the fourth.

But Maddie Loggins would add a goal for Fresno State with 1:42 left to shrink the SCU lead to one at 9-8 over the 'Dogs. Similar to their previous game, the Bulldogs had a chance as it came down to the wire but they couldn't pull it off and were eventually edged by Santa Clara, 9-8.

Fresno State will be back in the pool tomorrow for Day 2 of the Aggie Shootout. The 'Dogs will face off against Team China in an exhibition game at 9 a.m. PT and will close out the weekend against host UC Davis at 12:30 p.m. PT.
