Fresno State defeats Auburn 4-3 to advance in Blue and Gray Tennis Classic

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Fresno State men's tennis team defeated No. 4 seed Auburn in the 70th Annual Blue and Gray Tennis Classic. The Bulldogs defeated the Tigers 4-1 in the first round of the tournament.
Fresno State improves to 8-5 on season.
Doubles – Auburn earned the doubles point.
Mantas Bugailiskis and Cem Erturk fell at the No. 1 position 6-3. Xander Veys and Cagatay Soke defeated their opponents in a tiebreaker at the No. 3 doubles position. The Tigers clinched the doubles point at the No. 3 position when Youssef Hassan and Zdenek Derkas fell at the No. 3 position 6-4.
Singles – Erturk evened up the score when he defeated his opponent in straight sets (6-1, 6-2) at the No. 5 position. Bugailiskis gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead when he bested his opponent at the No. 1 position in straight sets (6-2, 7-6).
The Tigers tied the game 2-2 with a win at the No. 2 position in three sets. Jeremy Moser fell 5-7, 6-0, 6-3.
Veys won a three-set battle at the No. 3 position (1-6, 6-3, 6-3), giving Fresno State a 3-2 lead.
The match came down to the matches on court No. 4 and No. 6. The match was tied 3-3 when Auburn claimed the win at the No. 6 position. Soke fell in a close match 7-5, 7-5.
The match was clinched at the No. 4 position when Derkas defeated his opponent in three sets (7-6, 2-6, 6-3). This is the first match that Derkas has clinched for the Bulldogs this season.
Fresno State advances in the tournament to face No. 1 seed Arizona State on Saturday at 6:30 a.m. PT.Â
