The Diamond 'Dogs improved to 7-2 on the season on Sunday afternoon with a 4-1 win over Houston Baptist to win three of the four games in the series. The 'Dogs wrap up their five-game homestand on Wednesday night vs. UC Santa Barbara at 6:05 p.m.
Fresno State (7-2) won its third straight game churning out 11 hits offensively as the top six hitters in the lineup each had at least one hit apiece, while four of the six had a pair of base knocks. Sophomore catcher Carter Bins had a single, double and scored a run while redshirt junior left fielder McCarthy Tatum was able to do the exact same finishing 2-for-4 with a single, double and run scored.
Houston Baptist (3-5) was limited to three hits on the afternoon, all singles, as the Husky offense was shut down by strong Bulldog pitching. Freshman left-hander Jaime Arias, making his second start and third appearance of the season, tossed six innings allowing two hits, both in the first inning, one run, and struck out two to pick up his first career win.
Redshirt sophomore Ryan Sullivan came in for his team-high fifth appearance of the season working a pair of scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth before giving way to freshman Jamison Hill who worked around a one-out single, the Huskies' first hit since the first inning, to retire the final two batters and record his second save of the season.
How It Happened
For the third time in the four-game series, Houston Baptist struck first scoring right off the bat in the top of the first on an RBI groundout by first baseman Jake Pulcheon as HBU got their lone two hits off Arias in the first inning.
With the Bulldog hurler cruising the next five innings, the 'Dogs evened the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second as Tatum swiped home on a wild pitch. Fresno State added a second run in the fourth on an RBI single down the left field line by junior second baseman Jeremiah Burks scoring freshman center fielder Nate Thimjon.
The 'Dogs added insurance runs in the fifth and seventh scoring one run in each frame on a pair of RBIs by freshman Emilio Nogales. The freshman designated hitter from San Jose laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Bins in the fifth and drove a single up the middle in the seventh to score Korby Batesole for the 'Dogs final run.
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On freshman starting pitcher Jaime Arias' performance....
"He will have to get the ball down and was fortunate to get a lot of popups, but don't let the radar gun fool you. He has an outstanding arm and did a heck of a job holding them to one run in six innings."
On manufacturing runs offensively today....
"Houston Baptist is an experienced, old tough team and they don't make mistakes. They are going to give you nothing and everything you get you are going to have to earn and we thought we found a hole in their defense and tried to attack it. That team is going to win a lot of games and they have a 10-year major leaguer running their pitching staff in Xavier Hernandez and with the arms they have they pitched extremely smart and efficient."
On playing a lot of freshman throughout the season....
"They get in and get out of trouble and they don't get a heart rate. They just keep on doing their things and that is why we are keeping them in there. I am really proud of them and we continue to play tough defense and pitch well that is what this team is going to have to be."
Notes
- Thimjon scored his first career run.
- The pair of RBIs for Nogales were the first two of his career.
- Bins and Tatum each hit their fourth doubles of the season.
- The 7-2 start to the season is tied for the third-best after nine games in the Batesole era joining 2014 (7-2) and only topped by 2011 (8-1) and 2016 (9-0).
