FRESNO, Calif. - With seven Bulldog pitchers combining to toss a one-hitter on Wednesday night at Bob Bennett Stadium, the Fresno State baseball team defeated UC Santa Barbara, 6-1 to improve to 8-2 on the season.
The 'Dogs pitching staff of starter Nikoh Mitchell and relievers Chad Wilson, JJ Santa Cruz, Isaiah Davis, Jaime Arias, Ryan Sullivan and Tiegen Jones were simply dominate against the Gauchos limiting UCSBÂ to one single in the top of the third as the seven Bulldog hurlers combined to toss 12 strikeouts.
The Bulldogs offense tallied nine hits on the night led by multi-hit performances from the 'Dogs 2-3-4 hitters of Korby Batesole, Carter Bins and JT Arruda. All three of the ;Dogs tallied two hits apiece with doubles from Bins and Arruda and a career-high tying four RBIs from Arruda.
Santa Cruz notched his first win of the season pitching a season-high 1.2 innings while matching his season-best with three strikeouts. Redshirt freshman southpaw Tiegen Jones made his Bulldog debut in the ninth inning notching his first career strikeout.
How It Happened
UC Santa Barbara (2-6) struck first in the top of the third inning getting runners on first and second with no outs as the Gauchos' Clay Fisher laid down a bunt that was followed up with an errant throw by Mitchell that bounced off Batesole's glove allowing UCSB's Tevin Mitchell to score from second. With UC Santa Barbara threatening to build its lead after loading the bases with a walk to Cole Mueller, the 'Dogs Mitchell was able to escape the jam with a strikeout of Armani Smith to keep visitors lead to 1-0.
The 'Dogs took the lead for good with a three-run bottom of the frame scoring its first run on a groundout by Zach Ashford that allowed Miles Tomczak to score from third for the freshman's first career run. The Bulldogs added a pair of unearned runs later in the frame with two outs as a double down the left field line by Arruda drove home Bins and Batesole. An error by the Gauchos' Mitchell at second base allowed Bins to reach base and continue the frame and score the eventual game-winning run.
UCSB threatened to get cut the 'Dogs lead in the top of the fourth loading the bases with one out, but Santa Cruz came on to retire the next two batters striking out Fisher and center fielder Tommy Jew.
Making the Gauchos' pay for leaving runners on base, the 'Dogs added to their lead with a two-run bottom of the fifth scoring a pair of two-out runs on an RBI single back up the middle by Arruda that scored Batesole and Bins.
The 'Dogs added a run in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Zach Presno to give the Bulldogs their final run of the night.Â
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On Santa Cruz coming through with a pair of clutch strikeouts in the fourth...
"He has some great stuff and standing 6'7 the ball comes in there with some life. Those are some dirty pitches and came in clutch when we need him the most."
On the freshman pitchers continuing to excel....
"They pitch like they do not have a pulse and attack the mitt and get out of trouble and to this point they have not let it carry over. They have come through with some big innings and unlike last year we have have been able to get out of adverse situations."
