Diamond 'Dogs hold off Wolf Pack for 5-4 victory to even series

The Diamond 'Dogs used a solo home run from JT Arruda in the seventh and fended off a late ninth-inning rally from Nevada to defeat the Wolf Pack, 5-4 on Saturday night.
Fresno State (13-9, 4-7 MW) evened up its series with Nevada (11-8, 6-2 MW) using a two-run bottom of the seventh to complete a come-from-behind victory. The 'Dogs were led on the night offensively by two-hit performances from Zach Ashford, JT Arruda and Emilio Nogales while Carter Bins and Jeremiah Burks picked up the Bulldogs other two hits.
Arruda led the way as the lone 'Dog to notch an extra-base hit finishing with a single to go along with his fourth home run of the season as his solo home run in the seventh inning proved to be the game-winning run.
On the mound, junior Edgar Gonzalez improved to 4-1 on the season with the win as the right-hander went 7.0 innings allowing eight hits, four earned runs, walked two and struck out eight. Freshman Nikoh Mitchell and Hill came on to work the eighth and ninth innings, respectively as Hill recorded his fifth save of the season.
How It Happened
The 'Dogs struck first on the scoreboard for the eighth time this season plating a pair of runs in the second inning off Wolf Pack starter Grant Ford scoring a run on a single to left field by Burks that scored Arruda and Nogales came around to score later in the frame after a wild pitch on a Nolan Dempsey strikeout got away from Nevada catcher Kaleb Foster.Â
The Bulldogs increased their lead to 3-0 in the third inning on a one-out single through the right side by Nogales that drove in Bins from third.
Working a spotless first four innings, the Wolf Pack were able to get to Gonzalez in the fifth for four runs scoring one run on a one-out single by third baseman Daniel Perry that scored Foster from third base. Center fielder Cole Krzmarzick followed with a single to center field to load the bases and after designated hitter Mike Echavia struck out, first baseman Dillan Shrum followed with a bases-clearing double to right field that gave Nevada a 4-3 lead.
The 'Dogs tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly to right field by Bins bringing in Ashford in from third before Arruda followed with a longball to put the Bulldogs out in front 5-4.
The Wolf Pack did threaten to tie the game in the top of the ninth as Perry led off with a walk before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt and took third on a wild pitch, but Hill came through with a pair of clutch strikeouts to give the 'Dogs a one-run victory.
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On counting on freshman to contribute in many key moments in the game.....
"It is an amazing group, you have seven freshman playing in a true nail-bitter against the first-place team in the other dugout and it was amazing to be apart of. The game felt like it lasted 30 seconds and we were in it pretty deep and next thing you know and you look up and it is the ninth inning."
On the pitching performance today from the Bulldogs...
"The biggest piece of the puzzle today was on the mound and for Mitchell and Hill, two freshman, to come in the eighth and ninth, that's beautiful and that is as good as I have seen Edgar pitch on short rest and the downhill he had going today was fantastic and he needed every bit of it. He pitched smarter today than he has in whole career and it was more disciplined, he pitched brillantly."Â
