The Diamond 'Dogs return home for a four-game homestand next week hosting San Francisco on Tuesday night before welcoming New Mexico for a three-game Mountain West series next weekend.
LAS VEGAS - Losing a third straight one-run game on Sunday afternoon, the Diamond 'Dogs attempted a late eighth-inning rally, but came up short falling 5-4 at UNLV in the series finale of the Mountain West-opening series for the 'Dogs and Rebels.
Trailing 5-2 entering the top of the eighth, Fresno State (8-5, 0-3 MW) got a pair of runs back scoring a run on a sacrifice fly by junior second baseman Jeremiah Burks and a single to right field by senior shortstop Korby Batesole to cut the UNLV (11-1, 3-0 MW) lead to one, but that would be as close as the Bulldogs would get.
The 'Dogs outhit the Rebels, 6-5 in the contest as redshirt senior first baseman Nick Warren led the Bulldogs with a pair of hits collecting a single and his first double of the season to go along with an RBI. Junior outfielder Zach Ashford smacked his first triple of the season while Carter Bins hit his third home run of the year. The Bullldogs registered three or more extra base hits in all three games in the series and for the seventh time this season.
On the mound, redshirt freshman Oscar Carvajal suffered his first loss of the season as he was only able to work four innings allowing four hits, five runs, three earned and added a strikeout. Four Bulldog relief pitchers each worked one inning apiece combining to limit the Rebels to one hit and struck out three.
How It Happened
The Rebels jumped on the board from the start of the game scoring pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first taking as they took advantage of a Bulldog throwing error that would have ended the inning.
With UNLV leading 2-0, the 'Dogs fought back with a run in the top of the third scoring on a double to right center by Warren driving in fellpw fifth-year senior designated hitter Torin Goldstein. A leadoff home run to right field to start the fourth by Bins evened the game at 2-2 before the Rebels answered back with a three-run bottom of the frame.
With runners on second and third with no outs, a wild pitch by Carvajal brought in the first run before RBI singles by Grant Robbins and Vince Taormina gave UNLV a three-run lead. With relief pitchers Nikoh Mitchell, Isaiah Davis and JJ Santa Cruz each working an inning of scoreless relief in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to keep the 'Dogs in the game, the 'Dogs rally in the eighth could not be complete as UNLV reliever Bryan Mendez struck out the side in the top of the ninth.
Notes
- The last time Fresno State was swept in a Mountain West series was at New Mexico in 2016.
- The 'Dogs also started MW play 0-3 in 2015, but recovered to go 18-9 over its last 27 MW games and finished the season third in the conference.
- It was Ashford's fifth career triple and Bins' ninth career home run.
