'Dogs top Lobos 4-1 in MW home opener

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State men's tennis team defeated New Mexico 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center in its Mountain West home opener. The 'Dogs improve to 2-0 in conference play after picking up a road win at Air Force on March 23.
"We came out flat in doubles," said head coach Luke Shields. "The guys did a good job of recovering and came out with a purpose and resolve in singles. Our guys are getting tougher every match. New Mexico is one of the top teams in the conference, so this is a solid win for us. The guys have stayed true to their goal of staying undefeated at home."Â
Fresno State is now 13-10 (2-0 MW) and remain a perfect 9-0 at home this season
Doubles – New Mexico won the doubles point by earning wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions. The match at court No. 1 was left unfinished.
Singles – Zdenek Derkas cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 1 position to tie the match 1-1.
Fresno State took the lead 2-1 when Cagatay Soke defeated his opponent in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 5 position.
On court No. 5, Henrique Osorio gave the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead by besting his opponent 6-4, 6-4.
Xander Veys overcame a 4-1 second set deficit winning six-straight games to win his match 6-2, 6-4. Veys' win clinched the match for the Bulldogs.
At the No. 2 position, Mantas Bugailiskis forced a third-set after dropping the first set. Bugailiskis' match was left unfinished. At the No. 4 position, Cem Erturk won an intense first set tiebreaker to take a one-set lead over his opponent. Erturk's match was also left unfinished.
