Diamond 'Dogs honor Wonderdogs, drop series finale to Spartans, 10-7

On a special day at Bob Bennett Stadium that saw Fresno State Baseball honor the 10-year anniversary of the 2008 Wonderdogs run to the National Championship in Omaha, the current Diamond 'Dogs took a 6-5 lead into the top of the ninth, but were unable to hang on as San Jose State came back for a 10-7 triumph.
Fresno State (21-14, 8-10 MW), who lost back-to-back games for the first time since March 17-18 against the same San Jose State (14-20, 6-11 MW) team, notched its seventh straight game with double-figure hits finishing with 10 as eight different 'Dogs recorded at least one hit.
Junior left fielder Nolan Dempsey had a pair of singles while redshirt freshman JT Arruda added a single and his first career triple, drove in two RBIs and scored a run. Redshirt senior first baseman Torin Goldstein extended his hitting streak to nine games with a third inning RBI single as he hitting .667 in that stretch going 22-for-33 with five runs scored and 13 RBIs.
Junior center fielder Zach Ashford extended his on-base streak to 37 games as he reached base twice hitting his 10th double of the season, drew a walk and scored two runs.
On the mound, sophomore Davis Moore tossed five innings, his third-longest start of the season, limiting the Spartans to seven hits, four runs, two earned runs while walking three and struck out one.Â
Freshman southpaw Nikoh Mitchell tossed 3.1 innings, his longest outing since Feb. 24, allowing only one hit, but walked four and hit one to suffer his second loss of the season. Jamison Hill came on for the final two outs of the ninth, but SJSU was able to get to him padding their lead with three runs of the freshman right-hander.
How It Happened
After an on-field ceremony hosted by the Voice of the Bulldogs Paul Loeffler prior to the game that honored all 16 of the returning members of the 2008 National Championship team , the Spartans wasted little time putting the home team behind the eight-ball scoring a pair of runs in the top of first off Moore.
Spartans left fielder Brett Bautista led off with a triple down the right field line and came in to score the Spartans' first run on a wild pitch. SJSU added a run on a sacrifice fly to left field by third baseman David Campbell to lead 2-0.
The 'Dogs answered back with an RBI sacrifice bunt by Arruda in the bottom of the first to cut SJSU's lead to 2-1 driving in Ashford who led off with a double down the left field line.
The Bulldogs took their first lead of the game with a three-run bottom of the third scoring a pair of runs on an RBI single through the left side by Goldstein (watch) putting the 'Dogs up 3-2. An RBI single to left field by Jeremiah Burks drove in Arruda as the inning ended as Goldstein was tossed out attempting to advance to third base.
The Spartans tied up the game at 4-4 in the top of the fifth with a pair of unearned runs off Moore and took the lead in the sixth taking advantage of a pair of two-out walks by Mitchell to center fielder Kellen Strahm and first baseman Shane Timmons as right fieler Chris Williams drove home Strahm on a single through the right side.
Entering the bottom of the eighth facing a one-run deficit, the 'Dogs battled back with two outs as Burks drew a walk to put a pair of runners on for catcher Zach Presno who delivered a double to left-center driving in Burks and Carter Bins to give the 'Dogs a 6-5 lead (watch).
Unfortunately for the 'Dogs, the lead was short-lived as the Spartans rallied back for five runs in the top of the ninth connecting on five hits, all off Hill, to take a 10-6 advantage. The 'Dogs got one run back on Arruda's two-out triple down the left field line in the bottom of the ninth, but that was the extent of the rally as the Bulldogs dropped the series finale.
