FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State Wrestling program and head coach Troy Steiner announced the signing of Hunter Cruz for the 2018-19 season on Wednesday.
"We are excited to have Hunter Cruz part of our program," said Steiner. "It was important for our staff to get a kid from the state of Washington as he comes from one of the most storied programs in Washington in Moses Lake High School. We look forward to Hunter making an immediate impact to out middle weights."
A projected 165 or 174 pounder for the Bulldogs, Cruz makes his way south to Fresno after earning a pair of Washington High School Class 4A State Championships at Moses Lake High School in Moses Lake, Washington. Cruz won the 160 pound weight class this past February with a 1-0 win in the state finals and claimed the 152 pound title as a junior in 2017 with a 2-1 win in overime in the finals.
In addition to his pair of individual titles, Cruz also placed third at 160 pounds at FloNationals in Pennsylvania two weeks ago.
Cruz joins recent spring signee Adam Kemp, a Illinois State Medalist, along with three Bulldog signees from the fall. The 'Dogs have assembled a strong recruiting class for the 2018-19 season as Cruz and Kemp join Vacaville native Lawrence Saenz, South Dakota native Nick Casperson and Turlock native Isaiah Perez. The trio of fall signees all currently rank in the top 15 nationally by Intermat as Saenz checks in No. 11 at 138 pounds, Casperson is No. 13 at 195 pounds and Perez is No. 14 at 220 pounds.
