Fresno State falls to Utah State in the 2018 Mountain West Championship

SAN DIEGO – The Fresno State men's tennis team fell to Mountain West Regular Season Champion Utah State in the 2018 MW Championship 4-1, Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs punched their ticket to the final after defeating Air Force (4-0) in the quarterfinals and San Diego State (4-0) in the semifinals.
Doubles – The Bulldogs had the momentum early, earning the doubles point for the fifth consecutive match.
The Aggies started quick with a 6-3 win at the No. 1 position, to give Utah State the advantage.
Fresno State fired back when Mantas Bugailiskis and Youssef Hassan defeated the Aggies at the No. 3 position 6-4. The doubles point came down to the No. 2 position. Xander Veys and Cagatay Soke clinched the doubles point for the Bulldogs with a 7-5 win over their opponents.
Singles – Coming into the championship match, the Bulldogs had not lost a match in singles.
The Aggies had a response for the Bulldogs in singles, they came out firing.
Cem Erturk lost to a MW opponent for the first time this season, when Valdemar Holm notched a 6-3, 6-2 win at the No. 2 position. The match was tied 1-1.
Utah State took its first lead of the match when Aditya Vashistha bested Jeremy Moser at the No. 6 position 6-2, 6-4.
The Aggies extended their lead 3-1 when Jaime Barajas defeated Veys at the No. 1 position 6-4, 6-1. Barajas finishes the season undefeated against MW opponents.
The match was clinched at the on court #2, Sergiu Bucur bested Bugailiskis 6-3, 6-4.
Zdenek Derkas' match at the No. 3 position was left unfinished, Derkas was up a set when the match was clinched (6-3, 4-3). Soke's match on court #5 was left unfinished in the third set.
Utah State walked away with its second consecutive MW Tournament Championship.
Fresno State finishes the 2018 season with an overall record of 19-12 (6-1 MW). 19 wins is the most for the Bulldogs since 2012. Six regular season conference wins is the most the Bulldogs have chalked since joining the MW. Fresno State advanced to the MW championship match for the first time since joining the conference. Fresno State has increased its win total each season since head coach Luke Shields took over the program in 2016.
