The Diamond 'Dogs dropped a hard-fought contest in 10 innings to Hawai'i, 6-4 on Friday night at Bob Bennett Stadium.
Forced to extra-innings for only the third time in 2018, Fresno State (27-22) fell to 1-2 in games over nine innings this season as Hawai'i (24-19) scored a pair of runs in the top of the 10th on a one-out triple to center field by right fielder Adam Fogel off Bulldog relief pitcher Davis Moore.
Despite collecting 10 hits in the contest, the 'Dogs were unable to answer back in the bottom of the frame as they were retired in order by Rainbow Warrior closer Dylan Thomas.
The Bulldogs were led at the plate by redshirt freshman third baseman JT Arruda who finished 2-for-5 with a home run, triple (watch) and three runs scored while three other 'Dogs collected two hits apiece. Korby Batesole, Jeremiah Burks and Emilio Nogales each had a pair of hits as all three tallied a double in the contest.
On the mound, junior right-hander Edgar Gonzalez got his third-straight Friday night start tossing 6.2 innings allowing seven hits, three earned runs, two walks while striking out eight. It was Gonzalez's fifth game this season with eight or more strikeouts and his ninth quality start of the season.
Nikoh Mitchell, Ryan Jensen and Moore threw the final 3.1 innings for the Bulldogs as Moore suffered his third loss of 2018.
How It Happened
The Rainbow Warriors got the scoring started in the top of the second with two runs scoring a pair on a two-out double to right-center by first baseman Eric Ramirez.
Arruda wasted no time responding sending the first pitch of the bottom of the second over the right field wall for his seventh home run (watch) of the season.
A two-out single to center field by shortstop Maaki Yamazaki gave Hawai'i a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth, but the 'Dogs answered back in the bottom of the sixth with a run as Miles Tomczak drove in an RBI groundout to score Arruda, who led off with a triple to center field, from third to cut it to 3-2.
Burks continued to help the Bulldogs chip away at the lead tying the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh with a single through the left side (watch) to drive in Batesole from second after the senior shortstop hit his sixth double of the season.
A one-out single to right-center by Hawai'i's Fogel in the top of the eighth drove home left fielder Johnny Weeks from second to give the visitors a 4-3 lead, but the 'Dogs answered right back in the bottom of the frame with a two-out double to left-center by Nogales, his sixth two-base hit of the season (watch).
With the game knotted at 4-4 entering the ninth,Jensen sent the Rainbow Warriors down in order, but the 'Dogs were retired in order as well to send the game to extra innings.
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On tonight's game....
"It was a great game to watch and there was fantastic defense played by both teams all night long. We throw this game on a Saturday or Sunday and we are going to win a lot of the time, but on a Friday night and you are facing the opposing teams' best pitcher, you can't give them easy runs."
On Emilio Nogales' performance tonight....
"His plate discipline has been at a senior-level all season and he was again tonight."
On looking at other Mountain West scores
"We just have to worry about ourselves and can't be looking around at other scores. We have own stuff to worry about that."
Up next
