The Diamond 'Dogs fell 8-5 to Hawai'i on Saturday night at Bob Bennett Stadium.
With the game locked up at 5-5 heading into the ninth, a two-out double down the left field line by the 'Bows left fielder Johnny Weeks off Bulldog reliever Jamison Hill broke up the tie score before Hawai'i added two unearned insurance runs taking advantage of a Bulldog throwing error.
Fresno State (27-23), who has dropped six of its last seven games, outhit Hawai'i (25-19), 10-9 in the contest as junior second baseman Jeremiah Burks led the way reaching base in four plate appearances finishing a perfect 3-for-3 collecting a single, double (watch) and home run. The Vacaville native added a walk, two runs scored, two RBIs and his team-leading 12th stolen base of the season.
JT Arruda and Miles Tomczak each added two hits apiece as Arruda, much like Burks, hit his eighth home run of the season while Tomczak added his 10th double and scored and drove in a run.
On the mound, freshman left-hander Jaime Arias made his eighth start of the season tossing four innings allowing five hits, three earned runs, two walks and struck out two.
Redshirt freshman Oscar Carvajal followed tossing two innings limiting Hawai'i to one hit and one run while striking out three. Southpaw Tiegen Jones tossed two pitches while recording a double play and was followed by the Bulldog pitching debut of redshirt junior right-hander McCarthy Tatum. The Clovis native tossed 1.1 innings allowing a solo home run and struck out two. Hill closed out the game throwing an inning allowing two hits, three runs, one earned, two walks and struck out one.
How It Happened
The 'Dogs struck first in the second straight highly-competitive contest of the series with a two-out home run to left-center by Burks (watch) in the bottom of the first.
The Rainbow Warriors quickly tied the game at 1-1 with a two-out solo home run by second baseman Troy Kakugawa, only his second of the season, in the top of the second.
The Bulldogs kept the home run party going in the bottom of the frame as Arruda led off with an opposite-field shot (watch) clearing the left field wall.
Like he did all night, Burks came through in his next at-bat in the bottom of the third with a two-out RBI single to right-center (watch) to put 'Dogs up 3-1Â
Back-to-back solo home runs to leadoff the top of the fourth by right fielder Adam Fogel and third baseman Ethan Lopez tied the game at 3-3 before the Rainbow Warriors took took their first lead of the night in the top of the sixth inning as Lopez led off with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch, third on a groundout to second and scored on another wild pitch.
A solo home run by the 'Bows Lopez, who finished the game 3-for-5 with two home runs and three runs scored, off Tatum with two outs in the top of the eighth put Hawai'i up 5-3, but the Rainbow Warriors' lead did not last long as the Bulldogs responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at 5-5.
Burks led off the frame with his 13th double of the season before moving to third on an infield single by Arruda. Tomczak followed lacing a double down the left field line (watch) to drive in Burks to cut the visitors lead to one and after a Hawai'i pitching change, designated hitter Nolan Dempsey came through with a two-out double to left-center (watch) to tie up the contest.
After Hill recorded two quick outs in the top of the ninth, a single and walk put a pair of runners on for Weeks who delivered the game-winning hit with a ground-rule double down the left field line.
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On tonight's game....
"Three of their eight runs were given away by walks and wild pitches while we had to earn all our runs. That is what older guys know how to play through and play ahead and we are working through that right now."
On McCarthy Tatum making his pitching debut tonight....
"We have too many pitchers giving away walks, but he is one guy who throws strikes and hopefully that opens the eyes to some guys who didn't pitch tonight."
