Tallahassee, Fl. – For a second consecutive season, Fresno State Football senior wide receiver KeeSean Johnson has been selected to the Biletnikoff Award Preseason Watch List as announced by the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation on Thursday.
Given annually to college football's outstanding receiver at any position, the Biletnikoff Award was created and is sponsored by the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation. Any player, regardless of position (wide receiver, tight end, slot back, and running back) who catches a pass is eligible for the award. As such, the Biletnikoff Award recognizes the outstanding receiver, not merely the outstanding wide receiver.
One of 50 student-athletes on the initial watch list for the 2018 Biletnikoff, the award recipient is selected by the highly distinguished Biletnikoff Award National Selection Committee, a group of prominent college football journalists, commentators, announcers, Biletnikoff Award winners and other former receivers. Ten semifinalists will be announced on Nov. 12 with the three finalists set to be announced on Nov. 20.
Johnson, a native of Palo Alto, California, is coming off a standout junior campaign in 2017 as he earned Second-Team All-Mountain West honors after starting all 14 games for the 'Dogs leading the team in receptions (77), receiving yards (1,013) and receiving touchdowns (8). Johnson finished third in the MW in receiving yards (1,013) & touchdown receptions (8) and was fourth in receptions per game (5.50) & receiving yards per game (72.4).
The 6'2, 198-pound fifth-year senior was one of three Mountain West receivers to lead the conference with a three-touchdown performance as Johnson's came in a 41-21 win over Nevada at Bulldog Stadium on Sept. 30.
Johnson finished third in the MW with four 100-yard receiving games going for a season-high 119 yards against Boise State on Nov. 25 as he caught a career-long 81-yard reception for the 'Dogs longest play from scrimmage since 2016.
Catching a pass in all 14 games, Johnson moved his consecutive games with a reception to 36 to extend his own Bulldog program record. Adding 21 punt return yards, Johnson led the team with 1,034 all-purpose yards and enters his senior season with 180 career receptions for 2,123 yards and 16 touchdowns to go along with 2,427 all-purpose yards. He currently sits eighth in program history in receptions, 11th in receiving yards and tied for ninth in receiving touchdowns.
Johnson is one of three Mountain West student-athletes on the preseason watch list joined by McLane Mannix from Nevada and John Ursua from Hawai'i. Johnson is one of nine players who appear on the initial Biletnikoff Award Watch List for a second consecutive season.
The Mid-American Conference, Big 12 and ACC led the nation with seven receivers on the watch list apiece followed by the SEC and Conference USA with five each. All 10 FBS conferences had at least one representative on the watch list as the Pac-12, American and Sun Belt had four apiece followed by the Mountain West and Big 10 with three each and Independent Massachusetts had one.
The name Biletnikoff is synonymous with the term receiver. Fred Biletnikoff, a member of the pro and college football halls of fame, was an All-America receiver at Florida State University, and an All-Pro receiver for the Oakland Raiders. He caught 589 passes for 8,974 yards and 76 touchdowns in his 14-year Raiders career from 1965 through 1978 and was the Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl XI. The Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation (TQC), Inc., created the Biletnikoff Award in 1994.
The 2018 Biletnikoff Award winner will be presented live on December 6, 2018, on The Home Depot College Football Awards Show to be broadcast 7:00 - 9:00 pm (EST) on ESPN. The correlation between Biletnikoff Award winners and stardom in the National Football League is nearly uniformly consistent. Past Biletnikoff Award winners include Calvin Johnson, Randy Moss, Michael Crabtree, Amari Cooper, and Larry Fitzgerald.
The 2018 Biletnikoff Award winner will be presented the Biletnikoff Award trophy by college and pro football hall of famer Fred Biletnikoff and keynoter & 1993 Lombardi Award and Jim Parker Award Winner Aaron Taylor before 550 patrons at the Biletnikoff Award Banquet at the University Center Club at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee on Saturday, February 16, 2019.
