Joining delegations from eight different countries, France, Norway, Netherlands, Ukraine, Germany, Austria, Hungary, & Azerbaijan, World Team members, Olympic medalists and World champions will all train at the Fresno State Recreation Center as all the wrestlers prepare for the 2018 World Championships to be held in Budapest, Hungary on Oct. 22-28.
"We are honored to host Team USA in their preparations for the World Championships later this fall in Budapest, Hungary," said head coach Troy Steiner.
"Anytime you have a chance to be around athletes of this level it is exciting. They are true professionals, the detail they put into their work is amazing. I want our athletes here at Fresno State to come in and watch some of the practices as they prepare for the World Championships. A lot can be learned from being around and rubbing elbows with some of top coaches and athletes in the World," added Steiner.
With the USA Women's National Team being led by Steiner's twin brother, Terry, he brings a wealth of knowledge to the athletes as he is now entering his fifth Olympic cycle as the Women's National Team Head Coach and is now the longest-serving National Coach in USA Wrestling's programs.
The USA Team has been a world power in women's wrestling since the sport emerged in the late 1980s. Under Coach Steiner, the USA Team placed 2nd in 2003 and has been 3rd in the world eight times (2005, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015). The Olympic Games does not keep team score, but unofficially the USA was 2nd in 2004 and 3rd in 2008. Coach Steiner's Team was 3rd in total World/Olympic points scored in the Rio quad (131) and was also 3rd in the Medal count with ten medals.
Under Coach Steiner, Team USA has won 36 Senior Level World Medals, 7 Senior World Champions, 5 Olympic Medalists, and 1 Olympic Champion.
On Friday, Aug. 10, the team will hold an open practice at the Fresno State Recreation Center starting at 5:30 p.m. that is open to the public with an autograph session to follow.
