Bulldogs' comeback falls short against Lobos

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State women's soccer team dropped a close 2-1 match to New Mexico, Friday night. The Bulldogs had a season-high 23 shots against the Lobos.
"We had good energy that led to a lot of positive forward play, resulting in a lot of good opportunities," said head coach Brian Zwaschka. "The spirit the team had to be dangerous on offense was a lot better tonight, so we were happy about that. Unfortunately, we've been playing teams that have been more efficient than us. Our opponents are getting a few good chances, and they are converting them. We still need to find the net, and convert the chances we're getting. I think we're still searching for some offensive partnerships and we got some answers tonight, we're getting closer. We are looking forward to Sunday's match."
Fresno State falls to 1-8-2 (0-2-1 MW) on the season.
FIRST HALF
Tori Nicolo, Megan Amick, Alyssa Nishikawa, Ele Avery, Marie Gomez, Kasidee Wiley, Robyn McCarthy, Emma Chivers, Danielle Pacheco and Kayla Calmes notched the start for Fresno State, with Nicole Theroux in the goal.
The Lobos took an early lead, scoring on their first shot of the game. Jessica Nelson sent a pass from midfield into the box to Gwen Maly, Maly found the back of the net in the third minute.
Pacheco took the 'Dogs first shot in the eighth minute, but the Lobos' goalkeeper was there to make her first save of the game.
New Mexico extended its lead in the 16th minute, when Leilani Baker broke passed defenders for an unassisted goal.
The offenses were trading shots down the stretch of the half. Fresno State had four nice looks with shots on goal, off three corner kicks.
Freshman Danya Gutierrez put the 'Dogs on the scoreboard with her first collegiate goal in the 41st minute, scoring on a penalty kick.
After 45 minutes, Fresno State owned the advantage in corners, 4-2. New Mexico recorded more shots (16-23) and more saves (10-5).
SECOND HALF
Fresno State took a penalty kick in the 46th minute, looking to tie the match, but the New Mexico goalie made a phenomenal save.
The 'Dogs finished the game firing on offense, outshooting the Lobos 10-5 in the second half. Despite the Fresno State offense controlling the pace for the remainder of the match, New Mexico's goalie was able to save three equalizing shots to seal in the Lobos win.
