Five Bulldogs scored in double figures, led by Bree Delaney and Candice White’s 15 points.
FRESNO, Calif. – After an ice-cold start, Fresno State overpowered San Jose State 77-48 on Wednesday night at the Save Mart Center, winning the first conference game of the season. The 'Dogs fell behind 9-2 in the first six minutes of the game, but heated up to go on a 42-15 run to close out the first half and never looked back.
Fresno State continued to take advantage of its balanced attack with five players reaching double figures in the same game for the second consecutive contest. Candice White and Bree Delaney led the team in scoring with 15 points apiece, while Kristina Cavey, Jordanna Porter and Maddi Utti each picked up 10 points. Utti notched her first double-double on the season and fourth of her career as well, also adding 10 rebounds along with five assists.
How It Happened
It took nearly five minutes for Fresno State to find the bottom of the net after missing its first seven shots of the game, but they trailed just 4-2. The Spartans then scored another five points to take a 9-2 lead on the home side with 4:31 on the clock. The Bulldogs answered with six straight points before Delaney dropped in a 3-pointer to take their first lead of the game at 11-9 with 1:51 remaining in the quarter. Cydni Lewis added a pair at the line to level the game but the 'Dogs finished the period with a 7-0 spurt, capped by a 3 at the buzzer from Aly Gamez.
The Bulldogs carried their momentum from the final minutes of the first period into the second, hitting quick stretches of 7-0, 6-0 and 6-0 while holding the Spartans to 13 total points. During the final 13:29 of the half, Fresno State shot 68.1 percent (15-of-22), outscoring the Spartans 42-15 to take a 44-24 lead into the half. White led all scorers at the break with nine points to go along with five rebounds.
Fresno State would maintain a 20-plus point lead through the second half, moving it to 24 points after three quarters, before ultimately winning by 29, 77-48. While the offense, took center stage through much of the first half, the defense closed the game as the 'Dogs held SJSU to 26.5 percent shooting in the final 20 minutes, and like the first half, to only 24 points.
