‘Dogs continue steady improvement through CSUF Spring Invite

FULLERTON, Calif. – The Fresno State women's tennis team wrapped up competition in the CSUF Spring Invite, hosted by Cal State Fullerton in Fullerton, Calif., at the Titan Tennis Courts, on Sunday. In their second tournament of the spring season, the 'Dogs picked up eight individual wins over the course of the tournament.
On day one, Fresno State faced Arizona in doubles and took on Pacific in singles. The Bulldog tandem of Jennifer Timotin and Georgia Lawson lost a nail biter that required an extra set on court one to Arizona's Sophia Thomas and Csenge Furak, 7-6 (4), but the remaining duos from the Valley came out on top. Freshmen Deniza Marcinkevica and Ella Husrefovic took down Arizona's Gitte Heynemans and Taylor Tamblyn on court two, 6-3, while fellow freshmen A.C. Hummel and Jane Ellis blanked Cal State Fullerton's Petra Such and Taylor Valenzuela in an extra match on court three, 6-0.
In singles, the 'Dogs continued to battle. Timotin came out victorious on court one by overpowering Pacific's Dohee Lee, 6-3, 7-5. Hummel also finished on top, breezing by Pacific's Iona Popescu on court four, 6-2, 6-3. Marcinkevica, Husrefovic and Ellis each fell on courts two, three and five, respectively.
The Bulldogs added a couple more wins on day two of the tournament. In doubles, Timotin and Lawson stayed sharp, this time edging out Cal State Fullerton's Eira Tobrand and Luxizi Meng with a 7-5 win on court one. Marcinkevica and Husrefovic fell to Cal State Fullerton's Jadie Acidera and Caisey Lee Emery on court two, 6-2. Hummel and Ellis also dropped to Cal State Fullerton's Tiani Jadulang and Pacific's Sabrina Rodriguez in an extra match on court three, 6-2.
In singles, Fresno State only competed in three matches. On court three, Hummel fared well in a 6-2, 6-0, win over Arizona's Thomas. Although Timotin pushed her match to three sets, she and Husrefovic ultimately lost on courts one and two against Arizona's top two individuals.
On the final day of the tournament, the 'Dogs only competed in three matches. Both Fresno State pairs were perfect in doubles on the day as each came out on top over Pacific. Timotin and Lawson handled Pacific's Lee and Anneroos Nederstigt with a 6-0 sweep on court one. Marcinkevica and Ellis also handled their business, finishing Pacific's Jacquie Tan and Amaya Lopez-Clay with a 6-1 win on court two. Marcinkevica concluded the tournament for the 'Dogs in singles, but came up short in a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Cal State Fullerton's Tobrand on court one.
Fresno State's next action will be hosting the first dual matches of the season. The 'Dogs will face Stanislaus State in an exhibition match on Jan. 25 at 5 p.m., then take on Pacific on Jan. 27 at 12:30 p.m. for the first regular-season dual match. All Fresno State home matches are played at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center, and admission is free.
