Fresno State wraps up day one of Cal Cup

BERKELEY, Calif. – The Fresno State water polo team had a strong start to the 2019 Cal Cup. The No. 17 Bulldogs lost a hard-fought battle to No. 4 Cal, before defeating No. 11 Long Beach State.
"We had a good day today; I'm proud of how our ladies battled throughout the day, and were able to finish with a win," head coach Natalie Benson said. "It's tough to play two games in one day against good competition, but it was a great challenge for our group and will teach us valuable lessons about details, focus, and perseverance."

Fresno State is now 2-4 this season.
vs. #4 Cal – It was an intense first quarter with the Bulldogs and Bears exchanging goals. Callie Woodruff, Trystyn Vuori and Daphne Guevremont scored for the 'Dogs in the first eight minutes. Cal was up 4-3 at the end of the quarter.
Fresno State continued firing on offense during the second quarter. Vuori and Woodruff both netted their second goals of the game. The Bears would tack on two goals of their own to hold a one-goal lead over the Bulldogs, 6-5.
The Bulldogs had a high-scoring third quarter. Woodruff scored two goals and Vuori scored one, both Bulldogs logging a hat trick. Guervemont also found the back of the net in the quarter. Both teams scored four goals in the quarter. Fresno State trailed 11-9 going into the final quarter.
Emily Nicholson and Claire Schade got on the scoreboard for the Bulldogs in the fourth quarter. The Bears netted three goals of their own to take the win 14-10.
Mackenzie Richards was in the goal for Fresno State, she grabbed 10 saves in the match. Woodruff led the offense with a team-high four goals.Â
vs. #6 Long Beach State –  The Bulldogs started the game on a 3-0 run. Richards was clutch in the goal for Fresno State recording seven saves to keep LBSU scoreless in the first quarter.
The 49ers fought back in the second quarter scoring three goals. Isabella Magno kept the Bulldogs in the lead by scoring their fourth goal of the game.
Both offenses came out of halftime at full speed. Fresno State and LBSU both scored four goals during the third quarter. The Bulldogs outscored the 49ers with three goals in the fourth quarter to ensure an 11-9 win.
Richards recorded 10 saves in the net, one assist and one steal. Vuori led the Bulldogs on offense with a career-high four goals.Â
What's next – Fresno State will face #2 Stanford at 9:45 a.m. PT and #3 UCLA at 1 p.m. PT.
