FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Fresno State volleyball team fought hard on Thursday evening at No. 15 Colorado State, but fell in three sets to the Rams at Moby Arena.
Fresno State (10-7, 3-2 MW) dropped sets 25-22, 25-20, 25-17 as Colorado State (15-1, 5-0 MW) won its 14th straight match.
Leading the way for the Bulldogs offensively in the contest was junior outside hitter Desiree Sukhov who tallied her 15th match of the season with double-digit kills finishing with a team-leading 13. Freshman outside hitter Amaria Kelley tallied a season-high nine kills.
Senior setter Madelyn Halteman added 26 assists, as she moved into third place in program history in assists in the match, while junior libero Reagan Leonard led the way with 14 digs.
The 'Dogs were held to a .133 hitting percentage in the match while the Rams countered hitting .348.
How It Happened
The Bulldogs were able to take early leads in both of the first two sets as a kill by redshirt freshman Lauren Sabbatini gave the 'Dogs a quick 7-5 lead in the opening set (watch). The Bulldogs kept the strong play up extending their lead to 12-7 on an ace by freshman middle blocker Grace Doyle (watch) and took a 15-11 lead on a kill by Kelley (watch). The Rams responded with a 9-3 run to take a two-point lead and after CSU built a 23-20 advantage, back-to-back points for the 'Dogs on a service error and a kill by Doyle (watch) kept Fresno State in the set. Unfortunately, the final two points of the set went to the Rams for a 25-22 set win.
The second set again saw the 'Dogs open up a lead at the beginning jumping out to a 9-4 lead and stayed out in front, 10-7 after a kill by Sukhov (watch). Halteman's lone kill of the match pushed the Bulldogs in front, 14-11, but it was all Rams from there as a 6-0 run gave them back a lead they would relinquish. Two kills by Sabbatini kept the 'Dogs hanging around at 22-20, but three straight points for CSU closed out the set as the Rams won by five points.
The third and final set saw the 'Dogs and Rams run out to a 7-7 tie after a pair of blocks from Kelley and Doyle (watch) and the 'Dogs stayed with Colorado State after a pair of kills Sukhov locked up the set at 11-11. A 8-3 run by the Rams put CSU ahead 19-14 and the Rams closed out the set with six of the final nine points for a 25-17 win.
