Aces power 'Dogs past Utah State

FRESNO, Calif. - Despite missing two key starters, the Fresno State volleyball team used a season-high 12 aces to power past Utah State on Thursday evening at the Save Mart Center sweeping the Aggies.
Fresno State (12-9, 5-4 MW) won sets, 25-23, 25-16, 25-15 for their ninth sweep of the season.
With both junior outside hitter Desiree Sukhov and freshman middle blocker Grace Doyle sidelined by injury, the 'Dogs had to rely on other offensive weapons on Thursday to get the job done.
Junior outside hitter Amilya Thompson picked up the slack with a team-leading 13 kills while hitting .385 and added four assists, two service aces, three digs and three blocks.
Freshman outside hitter Amaria Kelley had a season-high 12 kills while hitting .269. Senior setter Madelyn Halteman tallied 26 assists while junior libero Reagan Leonard added 12 digs.
The 'Dogs outhit the Aggies, .232 to .059, held a 42-21 advantage in kills and a 12-3 edge in aces.
How It Happened
The 'first set saw both teams in a tight tussle as there were 12 ties and five leads changes and despite the Aggies coming within five points of taking the opening set, a 7-3 run by the 'Dogs ended the set in a 25-23 win. A kill by senior middle blocker Montez Uigaese got the Bulldogs within one at 20-19 (watch) with the 'Dogs clinching the set after a USU attack error (watch).
The second set saw the 'Dogs take control from the jump getting out to a 8-1 lead, moved it to 9-5 after block assists from Kelley and Rebecca Rendahl (watch). The 'Dogs increased their lead to seven at 22-15 after a block by Thompson (watch) and closed out the set with the final three points collecting a pair of kills by Thompson and a service ace by Lauren Sabbatini for a 25-16 win.
The final set saw the 'Dogs jump out to a 7-0 lead and never look back increasing it to 12-5 after an ace by Thompson (watch). The Bulldogs crusied to a 10-point win clinching the sweep on a kill by Kelley (watch).

The 'Dogs host Boise State (13-7, 5-4 MW) on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at the Save Mart Center. It will be Halloween Party as all kids in costume get in FREE! - Fresno State improves to 7-0 at home over Utah State since the Aggies moved to the Mountain West in 2013.
- The Bulldogs have now won all five MW matches by sweep and each of the last four home victories have been by sweep.
- It is the 'Dogs ninth sweep of the season and fifth at home.
- The Bulldogs move to 10-2 when winning the first set.
- Kelley's previous season high of 10 kills came against Wyoming on Oct. 12.
