'Dogs lose hard-fought battle to Boise State

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State volleyball team fought tough on Saturday afternoon falling at home to Boise State in straight sets.
In front of 1,065 fans at the Save Mart Center, the Broncos claimed the sets, 27-25, 25-23, 25-20 as the 'Dogs hung tough.
Down two starters for a second straight match without junior outside hitter Desiree Sukhov and freshman middle blocker Grace Doyle, the Bulldogs were led offensively on the afternoon by freshman outside hitter Amaria Kelley with a season-high 17 kills while she added three digs and two block assists.
Junior outside hitter Amilya Thompson notched her first double-double of the season with 15 kills to go along with 11 digs along andtwo block assists.
Senior setter Madelyn Halteman dished out 39 assists while junior libero Reagan Leonard led the way with 19 digs. Redshirt freshman Rebecca Rendahl registered a season-high six blocks to go along with four kills.
Fresno State (12-10, 5-5 MW) held a 44-34 edge in kills, but were outblocked by the Broncos, 18.0 to 9.0.
How It Happened
The 'Dogs jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the opening set and moved it to 9-3 on block assists by Julia Handy and Montez Uigaese (watch). Continuing to lead by five at 19-14 after a kill by Thompson (watch), the Broncos slowly crept back into the set going on a 7-2 run to tie it up at 21-21 heading into a timeout. With the set tied at 22, 23, 24, the 'Dogs had set point after a kill by Rendahl, but three straight points by the Broncos gave them a 27-25 win.
The second set saw the teams even through the first 22 points with the set locked up at 11-11 after a Bulldog attack error. A kill by Thompson pushed the 'Dogs in front by one at 13-12, but a 5-0 run by the Broncos gave them a 17-13 advantage. Block assists by Thompson and Uigaese (watch) ended the Broncos run and a kill by Kelley got the 'Dogs within one at 20-19. A ace by Jocelyn Rodriguez (watch) got the 'Dogs within one at 22-21 and a kill by Lauren Sabbatini kept the Bulldogs within one at 24-23, but a service error ended the set.
The third and final set saw the Broncos jump out to a 7-2 lead only for the 'Dogs to rattle off a 4-0 run to keep pace. The Broncos answered back with a 6-0 run to take a 13-6 advantage before a kill by Thompson ended the run (watch). Boise State pushed their lead to 18-10 and after the 'Dogs briefly brought it within five at 21-16, the teams traded the final eight points for a 25-20 set win for BSU.
Notes
The Bulldogs hit the road next week traveling to UNLV (12-9, 8-2 MW) on Thursday and New Mexico (6-16, 1-9 MW) on Saturday.

- The 'Dogs fell to 1-6 at home against Boise State since moving to the Mountain West in 2012.
- Kelley's previous season high of 12 kills came only two days against Utah State on Thursday.
- Rendahl's previous season of four blocks came against San Diego State on Oct. 14.
- Thompson tallied her 10th double-digit kill performance of the season.
- 18 blocks by Boise State were a season-high for a Bulldog opponent surpassing CSU Bakersfield's 17.0 on Sept. 5.
