The 2019 NCAA Wrestling Championship brackets and seeds were released for the five Fresno State student-athletes competing on Wednesday evening on the NCAA Selection Show.
INDIANAPOLIS - The 2019 NCAA Wrestling Championship brackets and seeds were released for the five Fresno State student-athletes competing on Wednesday evening on the NCAA Selection Show.
Fresno State will take five student-athletes to next week's NCAA Championships with sophomore heavyweight AJ Nevills leading the way as the 'Dogs highest-seeded wrestler at No. 14. The Clovis native will take on a familiar opponent in Wyoming sophomore heavyweight Brian Andrews, the No. 19 seed in the bracket. The two met earlier this season in Fresno with Nevills defeating Andrews, 4-2.
Junior 197-pounder Josh Hokit nabbed the No. 16 seed and will face 17th-seeded Stephen Loiseau of Drexel who will enter with a 22-8 overall record. With a win over the Dragon, Hokit will get a likely quarterfinal matchup with No. 1 seed and two-time national champion Bo Nickal of Penn State, a perfect 25-0 on the season and 115-3 in his career.
Other Bulldogs competing in Pittsburgh will be redshirt junior Khristian Olivas at 149 pounds as he claims the No. 21 seed and will face No. 12 seed Brady Berge of Penn State, who sits 18-3 overall.
Rounding out the Bulldog competitors will be a pair of redshirt freshman in No. 23 seed Jackson Hemauer at 184 pounds and No. 29 seed Gary Joint. Hemauer faces No. 10 seed and Big 12 competitor Samuel Colbray (26-6) of Iowa State while Joint will square off with No. 4 seed Mickey Phillipi of Pittsburgh (19-2).
The 2019 NCAA Wrestling Championships kick off on Thursday, March 21 at 9 a.m. PT with Session I on ESPNU.
