No. 15 Fresno State falls short vs. No. 13 LMU, 11-7

LOS ANGELES – The No. 15 Fresno State water polo team fell to No. 13 Loyola Marymount 11-7, Saturday afternoon. Callie Woodruff led the Bulldogs with three goals in the game.
Fresno State falls to 9-13 (1-2 GCC) this season.
How it happened – LMU won the sprint to open the game. The Lions quickly netted a goal to take a 1-0 lead with 6:39 left in the quarter. Woodruff put the 'Dogs on the scoreboard, netting a goal off a pass from Claire Schade. Daphne Guevremont tacked on another goal to give Fresno State a 2-1 lead with 4:17 left in the first quarter. LMU responded with back-to-back goals to retake the lead 3-2. Emily Diacono scored in the final minute of the quarter to tie the game 3-3.
The Lions won the sprint to start the second quarter. LMU's defense was able to hold Fresno State scoreless in the second quarter, enabling a 4-0 run for the Lions. LMU took a 7-3 lead into halftime.
LMU won the sprint to start the third quarter. Sienna Jagielski ended the Lions' run, scoring on a power play with 7:31 left in the third quarter. The Lions' offense closed the quarter on a 3-0 run to take a 10-4 lead into the final eight minutes.
Schade won the sprint, giving the 'Dogs possession to start the fourth quarter. Woodruff kicked off scoring in the quarter, sending a shot to the back of the net with 5:46 left in regulation. LMU would respond with its final goal of the game. Fresno State found an offensive spark with back-to-back goals from Woodruff and Schade, but it wouldn't be enough to complete the comeback. LMU took the win 11-7.
Fresno State outshot LMU 31-27, but LMU's goalkeeper was able to grab 13 saves. On offense, Woodruff netted a team-high three goals for a hat trick. Woodruff has recorded a hat trick in seven games this season. Mackenzie Richards recorded six saves in goal for the 'Dogs. Â
