FRESNO, Calif. – The No. 15 Fresno State water polo team came up short in a close game Friday afternoon falling to Golden Coast Conference foe No. 20 San Diego State, 9-7 in the Aquatics Center.Â
Fresno State (9-14, 1-3 GCC) had five Bulldogs score in the contest, led by Claire Schade and Trystyn Vuori with two goals apiece. Goalkeeper Mackenzie Richards played a tough game in goal for the Bulldogs, finishing the game with seven saves and a team-high three steals.
"Energy is something we've been talking about," head coach Natalie Benson said, "I was proud of the players on the bench and the energy they provided to start the game. I thought our players were prepared for the game and had a good attitude about it. There were some uncontrollable factors that we couldn't have prepared for, but that's just part of the game. We needed to battle through it, and we didn't make the adjustments that we needed to. There were a couple plays that went San Diego State's way, we had defensive break downs, there were a couple missed shots on our end and that's ultimately what decided the game."Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Aztecs won the sprint to open the game, but the Bulldogs struck first when Emily Nicholson found the back of the net off a pass from Callie Woodruff to take a 1-0 lead. An unassisted goal scored by Claire Schade recorded back-to-back goals for Fresno State. The Bulldogs boasted a 2-0 lead with 3:22 left in the first quarter. Fresno State played strong defense to keep San Diego State scoreless through the first eight minutes.
San Diego State won its second sprint of the game to start the second quarter. The Bulldogs made it a 3-0 run with a goal from Trystyn Vuori, assisted by Daphne Guevremont. The Aztecs kicked their offense into gear, scoring two consecutive goals to finish the quarter. Fresno State took a 3-2 lead into halftime.
The Aztecs won the sprint to open the third quarter, but Richards came up with a big save to deny the Aztecs a goal on the first possession. San Diego State regained possession to score back-to-back goals, taking its first lead of the game 4-3 with 3:39 left in the quarter. The Aztecs made it a 5-0 run, scoring on a penalty shot at the 43-second mark. Nicholson drew a penalty, and Guevremont converted the penalty shot to end the Aztecs' run. Schade took a shot from across the pool with one second left, the ball flew over the goalie's head into the back of the net, tying the game 5-5.Â
San Diego State swept the sprints with another win to commence the final quarter. Richards came up with another huge save on the opening possession, denying the Aztecs a go-ahead goal. San Diego State scored with 6:15 left to regain the lead 6-5. Woodruff drew an exclusion for the Bulldogs, Emily Diacono capitalized with a goal on the power play to tie the game with 4:54 left.
