Diamond 'Dogs see winning streak end with 8-2 loss to Lobos

The Diamond 'Dogs and Lobos play the rubber game of the series on Sunday at 12:05 p.m.
FRESNO, Calif. - The Diamond 'Dogs saw their season-long seven-game winning streak snapped on Saturday evening with a 8-2 loss to New Mexico at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
Fresno State (26-13, 12-7 MW) was held to six hits in the contest and gave up five New Mexico home runs.
Junior catcher Carter Bins was the lone Bulldog with a multi-hit contest notching a single to go along with his ninth double of the season and he scored one of the 'Dogs two runs.Â
Redshirt senior third baseman McCarthy Tatum drove in the 'Dogs first run of the game with an RBI single in the sixth inning.
Senior center fielder Zach Ashford extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a single in the eighth inning before coming out of the game with an injury while redshirt sophomore shortstop JT Arruda collected a single.
On the mound, junior right-hander Davis Moore picked up his first loss of the season tossing 5.2 innings allowing four hits, four earned runs, three walks while striking out six. Four more Bulldog relief pitchers saw action with redshirt freshman southpaw Robbie Peters going the longest at 1.2 innings.
How It Happened
New Mexico (19-23, 8-12 MW) took a quick 1-0 lead with a two-out solo home run in the top of the first inning by center fielder Jared Mang.
After Moore held the Lobos to one hit over the next three innings, New Mexico struck again with the long ball in the fifth inning as freshman catcher Ediberto Reyes led off with his first career home run to right field to push UNM ahead 2-0.
Four batters later, Mang went deep again for his second home run of the game with a two-run blast to left field to put the Lobos up 4-0.
With the Bulldogs limited to one hit through the first five innings off New Mexico starting pitcher Justin Slaten, the 'Dogs were able to get to the Lobo right-hander for two hits in the sixth plating. Bins led off with a double to left-center and Tatum was able to drive him home with with an RBI single to right field.
Holding on to a three-run lead, the Lobos put the game away with two two-run home runs, one by second baseman Tyler Kelly in the seventh inning and one by first baseman Connor Mang that gave the visitors a 8-1 lead.
The 'Dogs scored their second and final run of the contest in the bottom of the ninth as pinch-runner Nate Thimjon came around to score on a wild pitch.

- In addition to Ashford extending his hitting streak, Bins also moved his on-base streak to 22 games.
- It was the 'Dogs first loss since April 13 against Air Force and only their second in their last 13 games.
- Fresno State remains in first place in the Mountain West after San Diego State's 5-4 loss at UNLV on Saturday.
- It was Moore's first loss of 2019 and first since May 11, 2018 against Hawai'i.
