Wilson breaks steals record as Bulldogs blast Broncos 10-2 in 5 innings
5/10/2019 9:59:00 PM | Softball
Wilson singled and stole second to lead off the bottom of the first inning. Her 35th steal of the year broke the all-time program record of 34 steals, set by Brenna Moss in 2013 and 2014. Wilson has the second most steals in a season in MW history and is just one steal shy of matching that record. She also extended her team season-long hitting streak to 13 games and has reached base in 21 consecutive contests.

Fresno State (35-18, 13-10 MW) clinched its fifth MW series win over its last six series after also beating the Broncos by a 5-0 score in the series opener on Thursday. The highest scoring team in the MW and the eighth-highest scoring team in NCAA Div. I this season, Boise State (34-13, 12-11 MW) has been held to just two runs in 12.0 innings by the Bulldog pitchers so far in the series. The 'Dogs handed the Broncos just their second run-rule loss of the season, with the only prior occurrence coming in Boise State's third game of the year at No. 8 Texas.
Fresno State scored multiple runs in the first, third, fourth, and fifth innings, ending the night on a bases-loaded single from Rachel Minogue. Galvan recorded her first career two-homer game and had her third career three-hit game while also drawing an intentional walk. She drove in three runs as did freshman Vanessa M. Hernandez, who cleared the bases with a three-run triple in the third inning. Danielle Lung and Danielle East combined to allow just four hits and did not walk a single batter, with the two Bronco runs coming on a pair of solo homers.
How it Happened
After Lung retired the side in order in the top of the first, Wilson quickly got into scoring position with her single and steal. Two batters later, Galvan had a seven-pitch battle with Boise State starter Kelsey Broadus before hitting a two-run homer over the wall in left to give the 'Dogs the early lead. Morgan Lamb got one of those runs back as the Bronco DP hit a solo home run with two outs in the top of the second.
The 'Dogs were held off the board in the second inning, but in the third Galvan led off with a long home run well onto the berm in center field. With two out in the inning, Schuylar Broussard and Kelcey Carrasco had singles and Kaitlyn Jennings was hit by a pitch to load the bases for the freshman Hernandez, who laced a ground ball into the left center gap to bring home all three runners and give the 'Dogs a 6-1 lead.
Jessica McKay hit a solo home run with two out in the fourth to make it a 6-2 game, but in the bottom half Miranda Rohleder and Galvan led off with singles and the runners moved to second and third on a groundout. Senior Vanessa Hernandez hit a groundball that went under the glove of the second baseman as one run scored, than was overrun by the Boise State center fielder to bring home a second run and make the score 8-2.
East stranded a pair of runners in the top of the fifth and in the bottom half Jennings singled and scored from third on a failed fielder's choice on a grounder from Wilson, who advanced to second on a throwing error. Rohleder singled to move Wilson to third and stole second ahead of Galvan, who would be intentionally walked to load the bases. With the outfield drawn in, Minogue lifted a fly ball to left center that landed for a single to bring home Wilson and end the game.

On breaking the program single-season stolen base record at home…
"What an amazing feeling. The home crowd was electric tonight and I couldn't be more thankful to have broken this record. It was an amazing way to do it in front of the crowd here at Margie Wright."
On getting to keep the record-breaking base…
"I was so surprised. I said 'wait, are they going to give that to me?' and all my teammates were saying I was going to get the base and that was really cool. I have a great team behind me. When I came in the dugout all I got was hugs and I couldn't be more thankful."
On winning the first two games against Boise State…
"It's absolutely amazing. I think the Red Wave and the fans out here today really made an impact on everyone's performance. We just all battle together and that's what we do best. We have infectious energy and it's just fun to play with these girls."

- Wilson is just one stolen base from matching the single-season MW record of 36 steals, set by Utah's Molly McLean in 2001.
- With her single and a hit-by-pitch Broussard extended her reached-base streak to 20 consecutive games.
- Fresno State's 22 home wins this year are the most since the 2012 team finished 24-8 at home.
- Fresno State improved to 30-0 this season when scoring first.
- The Bulldogs earned their fifth win of the season against a team receiving votes in the national Top-25 polls. Boise State was the first team outside the Top-25 this week in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches' Poll.
Fresno State will play for its third sweep in the last four MW series in the series finale on Senior Day Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. but fans are encouraged to arrive at Margie Wright Diamond by 10:30 for the pregame ceremony honoring the six Bulldog seniors.
