The Diamond 'Dogs completed a series win on Sunday over San Diego State with a 8-3 victory on Senior Day.
FRESNO, Calif. - The Diamond 'Dogs used a six-run first inning to secure a 8-3 victory over San Diego State on Sunday afternoon at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium to complete a series win over the Aztecs on Senior Day.
Fresno State (32-14-1, 17-8-1 MW), who increased its lead to 2.5 games ahead of San Diego State (31-21, 15-11 MW) in the MW standings with the win, caught fire early with six runs on seven hits in the first inning and never looked back.
The 'Dogs tallied 12 hits in the contest with four Bulldogs each collecting two hits apiece. For the third game in a row, redshirt sophomore shortstop JT Arruda had a fantastic day from the plate finishing with a double, home run, two RBI and two runs scored.
Playing in their final home games as seniors, second baseman Nolan Dempsey and third baseman McCarthy Tatum each had two hits apiece. Dempsey hit a home run, scored two runs and drove in another while Tatum scored one and drove in one. Finally, fellow senior Auston Chastain went 2-for-2 with a RBI, walk, stolen base and added an outfield assist.
On the mound, sophomore lefty Nikoh Mitchell got the start tossing two innings before giving way to fellow sophomore right-hander Jamison Hill who tossed 3.2 innings on his way to his second win of the season. The San Diego native allowed one hit, one earned run, three walks and struck out one.
Oscar Carvajal and Jaime Arias combined to throw the final three innings as each only allowed one hit apiece.
How It Happened
Much like Friday's game that saw the Bulldogs score five runs in the first inning, the 'Dogs did much of the same on Sunday exploding for six runs on seven hits while sending 10 guys to the plate.
Arruda got the scoring started with a RBI double to left field (watch) and Tatum followed with a RBI single up the middle (watch) to give the 'Dogs a quick 2-0 lead. Dempsey kept the hitting going with a bunt single and designated hitter Emilio Nogales continued the scoring with his seventh double of the season driving in Tatum from second base (watch).
Sophomore left fielder Nate Thimjon found the right time for his first triple of the season smacking a two-run RBI triple (watch) to right-center to bring around both Dempsey and Nogales and push the 'Dogs lead to 5-0.
Chastain rounded out the scoring for the 'Dogs with a chopping single through the infield that brought in Nogales and made it 6-0 in favor of the 'Dogs. After a single by catcher Zach Presno, the Aztecs were forced to make a pitching change bringing in left-hander Jacob Flores after starting pitcher Aaron Eden was only able to record one out.
The 'Dogs increased their lead to 7-0 in the second inning with Arruda's seventh home run of the season (watch).
The Aztecs tried to fight their way back into the game with two runs in the third inning, one on a fielder's choice by shortstop Angelo Armenta and another on a wild pitch, and tacked on one more in the fourth on a double play, but were unable to get any closer.
The final five innings saw the 'Dogs limit the Aztecs to three hits as Dempsey scored one final run in the seventh inning with a solo home run to left field (watch) that put the 'Dogs up 8-3.
