FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State Wrestling junior heavyweight AJ Nevills spent time in July training in China with the Chinese National team and 2018 World Silver medalist Zhiwei Deng . GoBulldogs.com caught up with the two-time NCAA Tournament qualifier to learn about his experience.
Q: What was your experience like training this summer in China?
Nevills: "It was eye-opening for me to get to see how a different culture trains and what they believe is important for someone to be successful in wrestling."
Â
Q: What did you learn from training with 2018 World Silver medalist Zhiwei Deng?
Nevills: "He showed me I have a long way to go until I am satisfied with my wrestling. He also showed me foreign wrestling technique that I believe will help me in the future."
Â
Q: What was the biggest adjustment you had to make while being in China?
Nevills:Â "Eating rice and noodles everyday for three weeks was an adjustment. Also, China has a lot of restrictions on the Internet so I went a long time without watching any television, Netflix or Hulu so it made passing the time when not wrestling go slower.
Â
Q: Were you able to take time away from the wrestling mat to explore the country?
Nevills:Â While I was in China, I visited the Great Wall of China, Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. Those are some of my favorite memories from the trip. I will never forget being on top of the Great Wall and looking out at the countryside."
Â
Q: What do you hope to learn from your experience that you will be able to bring back with you to the Bulldogs this season?
Nevills:Â Maturity. I think this trip helped me grow a lot as a person and I am ready to get back on the mat and start working towards my goals for next season."
Â
Q: What was the most interesting thing you have had to eat while in China?
Nevills:Â I had the specialty Beijing Duck, it was delicious."
Â
Q: Anything else you want to add about getting to have this unique experience?
Nevills: "I want to thank the Chinese National team for letting me go train with them and give me the opportunity to see their country and culture."
