LAS VEGAS – Following a double-digit defeat to West Virginia in the season opener yesterday, Fresno State bounced back in a big way on Saturday cruising past Lamar, 99-49, in its final game of the South Point Thanksgiving Shootout. It was the most points the Bulldogs have scored against a Division I opponent since March 7, 2014, and first 50-point win over a Division I opponent since Dec. 12, 1987.
After struggling from the field yesterday, Fresno State shot a blistering 60 percent from the floor (35-of-58) and 41 percent from 3 (9-of-22). The 'Dogs were also just as strong on the defensive end, holding the Cardinals to 26.9 percent (18-of-67) shooting and just 1-of-19 from 3 (5.3 percent).
Hanna Cavinder led the Bulldogs in the scoring column for the second straight day, posting 24 points on 9-of-12 shooting. She was joined in double figures by Haley Cavinder (17), Aly Gamez (15) and Maddi Utti (15). Haley Cavinder finished just shy of a triple double, leading the team with 10 rebounds and eight assists.
How It Happened
Fresno State started on the front foot from the tip with a 3-pointer from Hanna Cavinder 12 seconds in. That started a 7-0 run to open the game. The 'Dogs extended their run to 16-4 just over six minutes into the game. Despite holding a 20-7 lead after first quarter, Fresno State had eight of its 16 turnovers come the first 10 minutes. The Bulldogs cleaned that up and dropped 30 points in the second, hanging runs of eight and 12 unanswered points on the Cardinals. Hanna Cavinder's 19 points on 8-of-9 shooting was the catalyst for Fresno State's 50-18 halftime lead.
Following an 8-0 stretch for the Cardinals midway through the third, Fresno State worked their advantage back up 29 with 10 minutes to play. Keely Brown opened the fourth with a trey, and minutes later the Bulldogs put together another 12-0 run in just over two minutes to open up an 85-43 lead with six minutes to go. Fresno State closed the game with 11 unanswered points, punctuated by a 3's from Yanina Todorova and Daylee Dunn.
