Diamond 'Dogs sweep doubleheader over Columbia

FRESNO, Calif. - The Diamond 'Dogs continued their winning ways on Saturday sweeping a doubleheader over Columbia winning game one, 7-4 and game two, 10-2 at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
Fresno State (6-4), who extended its winning streak to four games with the two wins, continued a strong week from the plate totaling a combined 17 runs and 22 hits in the pair of games.
Junior Zach Presno smacked a home run in both contests going 2-for-3 with three runs scored in game one and added a three-run home run and scored two runs in game two.
Junior outfielder Nate Thimjon belted his fifth home run of the season in game one and added a double and two RBIs in game two while scoring a run.
Redshirt sophomore outfielder Dylan Johnson had a pair of hits in each game and tallied his first career triple and scored a pair of runs in game two.
On the mound, the 'Dogs got stellar starting pitching performances from right-handers Oscar Carvajal and Jamison Hill.
Carvajal went a career-high 6.2 innings in game one allowing seven hits, two earned runs and struck out five for his first win of the campaign. Hill turned around in game two and tossed a career-high 7.0 innings striking out a career-best 10 while limiting Columbia (0-3) to six hits, two earned runs and no walks for his first win of 2020.
How It Happened: Game 1
The Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the opening game as Presno smacked a two-out solo home run to left field off Columbia starting pitcher Billy Black in the first inning. Shortstop Jeff Jamison laced his first double of the season to right field in the second inning driving home Johnson, but would be thrown out at third base attempting to extend his hit to a triple.
After being held to two hits through four innings by Carvajal, the Lions broke through in the top of the fifth on an RBI single to right field by second baseman Josh Nicoloff to cut the 'Dogs lead in half to 2-1.
The Bulldogs quickly answered back with three runs in the bottom of the frame as Jamison raced around from first base after a throwing error by the Lions catcher down to first base. Thimjon followed with a solo home run to left-center and first baseman Emilio Nogales smacked a triple, his first of the season, to left-center driving in Presno to give the 'Dogs a 5-1 lead.
A solo home run by Columbia's Andy Blake in the sixth got one run back ffor the Lions, but the 'Dogs answered back with one run in both the seventh and eighth innings to extend their lead to 7-2.
With right-hander Ryan Sullivan on the mound to close the game out, Columbia made things interesting scoring a pair of runs off the redshirt senior on a solo home run by left fielder Joshua Solomon and an RBI single by third baseman Matt Cerfolio.
With the 'Dogs clinging to a 7-4 lead and Lions on the corners and two outs, freshman Alex Kendrick came into the game and with one pitch got catcher Liam McGill to groundout to Jamison at shortstop who relayed it on to Andrew Kachel at second base to give the Bulldogs the win.
How It Happened: Game 2
The nightcap saw the 'Dogs keep their hot-hitting going reaching double-digit runs for the third time this season. Jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the first, Johnson led off with a triple to left field and Thimjon drove him in with a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Bulldogs extended their lead to 6-0 with a five-run third inning as Thimjon drove in his second run of the contest with an RBI double down the left field line.
Presno followed with a three-run shot to left field off starting pitcher WIll Geerdes. Back-to-back singles by Nogales and Zach Morgan put a pair on base for Kachel who bounced out to third base, but an errant throw allowed Nogales to score from second.
The Lions got on the board in the fourth inning with a leadoff home run by center fielder Julian Bury, but the 'Dogs got the run back in the bottom of the frame as Jamison scored on a wild pitch.
Columbia added its second and final run in the sixth inning on an RBI single to center field by McGill to cut the 'Dogs lead to 7-2.
The Bulldogs recorded three more runs adding a pair in the seventh and one more in the eighth for a eight-run margin of victory.
