FRESNO, Calif. - With the start of the 2020 Fresno State baseball season only four days away, GoBulldogs.com sat down with junior catcher Zach Presno to touch on his time as a Bulldog and what he expects of himself and the team this season.
Entering his third year as a Diamond 'Dog this spring, the Clovis native has played in 105 games at Fresno State while making 77 starts.
As a freshman in 2018, Presno appeared in 48 games making 21 starts while ranking 11th in the Mountain West smacking eight home runs and was named an Academic All-Mountain West selection.
Helping the Bulldogs win both the Mountain West regular season and tournament titles a year ago, Presno played in all 57 games as a sophomore making 56 starts with 55 coming at first base and one behind the plate. He collected 19 extra-base knocks, including nine doubles and tied for third in the MW with 10 home runs.Â
Named the 15th-best prospect for the 2020 MLB Draft in the Mountain West by D1Baseball.com, Presno enters his junior year primed to work his way into the spotlight.
Q: What skills has baseball taught you that you can use off the field?
Presno: "Baseball has taught me discipline on and off the field. Coach Batesole and all my coaches before have taught me how hard work pays off and to always give 100% in everything you do."
Q: What is one thing that Coach Batesole says that you will always remember?
Presno: "That family always comes first. At the end of the day baseball is just a game, but family is for life."Â
Q: What do you expect from yourself and the team on the diamond this season?
Presno: "For us to compete every pitch and play at a high level. We have a very talented team that is capable of going very far."
Q: Which of your past or present Fresno State teammates has been your biggest influence during your time as a Bulldog?
Presno: "Carter Bins was a great mentor for me and I was lucky to be able to learn from a great player."
Q: How has being a student-athlete prepared you for success in the future?
Presno: "Being a student-athlete teaches you how to balance your responsibilities and learn how to prioritize."
Q: Do you have any advice for young and aspiring baseball players?
Presno: "My advice would be to always compete at the highest level possible and never take a pitch off."
Q: What is your favorite part about being a Bulldog?
Presno: "The best part about being a Bulldog is being able to represent this great valley."
Q: What is your favorite memory as a Bulldog?
Presno: "My favorite memory is winning a Mountain West Championship and playing in a regional."Â
