PHOENIX -Â The Diamond 'Dogs fell 8-3 at No. 10 Arizona State on Sunday afternoon in the series finale against the Sun Devils at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
Fresno State (8-7) was held by Arizona State (13-4) pitching to four hits with sophomore second baseman Ryan Higgins leading the way with two hits for his sixth multi-hit game of the season and scored one of the 'Dogs three runs.
Sophomore shortstop Jeff Jamison registered his second double of the season and scored a run while junior designated hitter Emilio Nogales notched the Bulldogs other base hit along with scoring a run and driving in a RBI.
On the mound, junior right-hander Oscar Carvajal made his fourth start tossing four innings striking out four, but was charged with seven earned runs and his second loss of the season.
Junior southpaw Nikoh Mitchell tossed 2.2 innings in his third relief appearance striking out three while freshman Alex Kendrick and senior Nik Cardinal combined for the final four outs.
How It Happened
Striking first for a second straight game against the Sun Devils, the 'Dogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a RBI groundout by catcher Zach Morgan that drove in Nogales, who reached base after a throwing error by Sun Devil shortstop Alika Williams.
Arizona State responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the second off Carvajal on a two-out two-run double to left field by center fielder Dusty Garcia.
The Bulldogs wasted little time answering back tacking on two runs in the top of the third as Jamison led off with a double to right field and quickly came around to score on Higgins' single up the middle. A walk to first baseman Zach Presno put a pair of runners on base for Nogales who laced a single to left field to bring home Higgins and give the 'Dogs a one-run lead.
The lead was short-lived for the 'Dogs as it was all Sun Devils from there with ASU scoring six unanswered runs plating two in the bottom of the fourth and four more in the fifth.
