Hokit tabbed NWCA Second-Team All-American

MANHEIM, Pa. - Despite the 2020 NCAA Wrestling Championships being canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Fresno State senior heavyweight Josh Hokit was tabbed a Second-Team All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches Association on Friday.
"During difficult times there are always people who rise to the occasion and I am proud of the action that the NWCA Division I Leadership Group in providing direction for honoring the 2020 Division I All-American team," said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer. "It is important that these athletes' efforts and successes during the season are recognized. Congratulations to each of this year's honorees and National Qualifiers."
All-American honors were based on each wrestler's overall body of work through the conference tournaments and up to the national championships.
After finishing fifth at 197 pounds at the 2019 NCAA Wrestling Championships to earn All-American honors, Hokit moved up a weight class as a senior this season going 24-4 and earned the No. 12 seed at the 2020 NCAA Championships.
Posting a 11-1 mark in dual meets, the Clovis native collected 14 wins by decision, five major decisions, three falls, one technical fall and one forfeit on the season.
Earning third place at the 2020 Big 12 Championship, Hokit overcame a quarterfinal loss to close out his Bulldog wrestling career with four straight wins.
Hokit was one of six Big 12 heavyweights to earn All-American honors as Tate Orndorff (Utah Valley) was selected to the first team, Gannon Gremmel (Iowa State) joined Hokit on the second team and Brian Andrews (Wyoming), Carter Isley (Northern Iowa) and Dalton Robertson (Northern Colorado) were named honorable mentions.
A two-sport student-athlete at Fresno State, Hokit closed out his Bulldog career on the mat with a 60-20 overall record along with playing in 51 career football games for the Bulldogs where he racked up 1,260 rushing yards and 17 rushing touchdowns.
The National Wrestling Coaches Association, established in 1928, is a non-profit organization for the advancement of all levels of the sport of wrestling with primary emphasis on developing coaches who work in academic environments. The three core competencies of the NWCA are: Coaching Development, Student-Athlete Welfare, and the Promotion of Wrestling.
