Haley Cavinder named to Becky Hammon Award watch list

HOPEWELL, N.J. -- Fresno State's Haley Cavinder was selected as one of 25 players to the preseason watch list for the 2022 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award, announced by Her Hoop Stats on Wednesday morning. The Becky Hammon Award was first awarded in 2020, with South Dakota's Ciara Duffy being named the inaugural winner. This year's preseason watch list includes representatives from 22 schools and 13 conferences.

- Selected 2021-22 Mountain West Preseason Player of the Year.
- Named 2021 Mountain West Player of the Year to become the only player in conference history to win the award the year after being named Freshman of the Year (2020).
- Was the first sophomore to win the Mountain West's top honor since 2004, joining Kim Smith (Utah) and Linda Frolich (UNLV) as the only sophomores to accomplish the feat.
- Selected to the All-Mountain West and Mountain West All-Tournament Team during her first two seasons at Fresno State.
- Only player to earn multiple MW Player of the Week honors during the 2020-21 season, doing so three times.
- Named to 2021 WNIT Fort Worth All-Region Team.
- Her 20.6 points per game during the 2020-21 conference season ranked sixth-highest in league history.
- Posted 11 of her league-leading 17 20-point games in conference play, including seven during the final nine regular season games, and finished the year with 10 in her last 14 outings.
- In 2020-21, led the Mountain West in scoring (19.8) and minutes played (36.67), was second in free-throw percentage (.846), fifth in 3-pointers made (2.07), sixth in rebounding (7.54), steals (1.68) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.48), and eighth in assists (3.75).
- Nationally in 2020-21, ranked sixth in total minutes (1026:50), ninth in field goal attempts (479), 16th in made field goals (204), 18th in total points (554), 26th in 3-point attempts (177), 32nd in points per game (19.8), 38th in minutes played per game (36.67), 39th in 3-point field goals made (58), 46th in free-throw percentage (84.6), 66th in total rebounds (211), and 71st in total assists (105).

Award Eligibility & Schedule
To be eligible for this award, players must compete in one of the 26 conferences deemed to be "mid-major." The following conferences are considered high-major for the purposes of this award, and thus ineligible: ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-12, and SEC. In January, 15 players will be named to the midseason watch list. The 10 semifinalists will be announced in February, with five finalists being announced in early March. The winner will be announced in late March. The list is fluid and players may play their way on or off the list over the course of the season.
About Becky Hammon
Hammon was a three-time All-American during her career at Colorado State and led the Rams to the Sweet 16 in 1999, the program's only appearance to date. She was signed by the New York Liberty in 1999 and traded to the San Antonio Stars in 2007, where she played the rest of her career.

Hammon retired in 2014 as a six-time All-Star and a two-time All-WNBA First Team honoree. In 2016 she was named one of the top 20 players in WNBA history and was recently named to the W25. Hammon became the second female coach in NBA history when she began coaching for the San Antonio Spurs in 2014. Additionally, Hammon is the only woman to be a head coach in the NBA Summer League as well as the only woman to be a member of an NBA All-Star coaching staff.
