'Dogs capture Pacific Central Valley Championship

FRESNO, Calif. -- The Fresno State men's tennis team won the Pacific Central Valley Championship for the second year in a row Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs won their two matches against each of their opponents, sweeping Nevada 4-0, then defeating Azusa Pacific to clinch the tournament.Â
"This year there might only be three teams but it's still special to keep the trophy here," Fresno State head coach Luke Shields said. "Our guys are team players and in a tournament format they really step up and today they did a great job."Â
Doubles - vs. Nevada
Fresno State opened up the tournament with doubles play against Nevada and quickly took the lead winning at the No. 2 spot from the pairing of Zdenek Derkas and Dario Huber, 6-4. However, Nevada took the second match, winning at the No. 3 spot with their pairing of Loris Zisswiller and Satchel Benn defeating the Bulldogs Alexey Aleschev and Reece Falck, 6-4.Â
In the final doubles match, the 'Dogs pulled out the victory at the No. 1 spot with Angus Bradshaw and Aleksandr Myagkov winning 7-6.Â
Singles - vs. Nevada
The 'Dogs jumped out to a quick lead in singles play, claiming three straight victories to clinch their win. The first win came at the No. 5 spot from Myagkov, 6-4, 6-3, to open things up. Angus Bradshaw claimed the next victory at the No. 3 spot winning 6-2, 6-2, and Zdenek Derkas clinched the victory after winning at the No. 1 spot 7-5, 6-0.Â
Doubles - vs. Azusa Pacific
Fresno State opened doubles play against the Cougars with a loss at the No. 1 spot, with the pairing of Bradshaw and Myagkov falling 6-4. The 'Dogs soon rallied for a win at the No. 2 spot however with the pairing of Aleschev and Falck winning 6-4.Â
The 'Dogs clinched the doubles point with a win at the No. 3 spot from Huber and Cody Castro 6-4.Â
Singles - vs. Azusa Pacific
The 'Dogs started hot and dominated in singles play, starting things off with a win at the No. 4 spot from Myagkov 6-2, 6-0. Quickly after, Azusa Pacific won at the No. 1 spot when Jakob Schnaitter defeated Fresno State's Derkas 6-1, 6-1.Â
However, the 'Dogs went on to win two straight matches to clinch the win, the first being from Aleschev at the No. 5 spot 6-1, 6-3. Falck won his match shortly after, clinching the win 6-2, 6-2.Â
The remaining two matches were played out with Azusa Pacific winning at the No. 2 spot 7-6, 6-3, and the Bulldogs Angus Bradshaw finishing the tournament with a win at the No. 3 spot 6-3, 7-5.Â
