'Dogs win in season opener versus FPU

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State water polo team earned a 19-5 win in its season opener against Fresno Pacific on Saturday afternoon at the Aquatics Center. The Bulldogs saw 13 different goal scorers in the victory.

Freshman Apryl Gonzalez led the Bulldogs with three goals on five shots. Junior Yesenia Preciado had a team-high three assists. Fresno State had three goalkeepers share time in the cage as Kate Watley got the start, and Hope Stokes and Mackenzie Matheny saw time in relief.
Additional goal scorers for the Bulldogs include Preciado, Callie Woodruff, Daphne Guevremont, Isabella Sonkoly, Sydney Coachman, Megan Greenwood, Emily Diacono, Sienna Jagielski, Kaitlin Howarth, Claire Schade, Mia Barr, and Grace O'Callaghan. Â

How it happened
Fresno State was off to a hot start early on, outscoring FPU 6-0 in the first period of play. The Sunbirds didn't score their first goal until the 4:45 mark of the second quarter. Fresno State was out to an 8-1 lead before FPU got on the board.

At the half, the Bulldogs' offensive attack was fiery with a 12-2 lead. Barr, a freshman attacker, had a pair of back-to-back goals to close out the half for the Bulldogs.

Scoring for both teams was slim in the third quarter, but Fresno State managed to score twice to take a 14-2 lead into the final minutes. The Bulldogs outscored the Sunbirds 5-3 in the fourth quarter to finish the game with a 19-5 victory.

The Bulldogs will hit the road for the first time of the 2021 season next Saturday (Feb. 13) to face UC Davis. The game is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. PT.
