How It Happened
The game got started with the Lobos striking first with a run in the top of the first inning, but the Bulldogs got two runs back on a sacrifice fly by Emilio Nogales and an RBI single by Zach Presno for a 2-1 lead.
The Lobos answered back with four runs scoring one run in the second, a solo home run in the fourth and two runs in the fifth scoring on a solo home run and an RBI groundout to take a 5-2 lead after four-and-half innings.
New Mexico threatened to break the game open in the top of the sixth loading the bases with two outs, but Kevin Larson struck out Jarrett Gonzales to end the threat.
The 'Dogs capitalized on the momentum in the bottom of the sixth and scored two runs with an RBI single through the right side by Dylan Johnson and a bases-loaded walk by Ivan Luna cut the Lobos' lead to 5-4.
Higgins tied the contest in the bottom of the eighth with a two-out, pinch-hit solo home run to left field to tie the game at five before Kachel's heroics in the ninth gave the 'Dogs the win as his double down the right field line drove in Andrews, Jr. from first base.Â
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On EJ Andrews, Jr's speed around the bases to score the game-winning run....
"EJ is a different class of runner and a real class kid to be around everyday. You love to see kids like that get rewarded and when you fight and you fight through all of the things we have fought through in the the last 13 months and then to see it happen for a gem of a kid like that, that is what makes it all worth coaching."
On coming back for the win....
"It was one of those season-changing wins and that was what today was about. We could have went one way and we decided to go another way. Last night was a rough one and to answer back in the fashion that they did, you can be real proud of your Bulldogs."
