FRESNO, Calif. - Overcoming a four-run deficit, the Diamond 'Dogs reeled off five unanswered runs to defeat Pacific, 5-4 on Wednesday afternoon at Bob Bennett Stadium.
Fresno State (7-8) held Pacific (7-11) scoreless over the final five innings and used a three-run fourth inning and one run apiece in the fifth and seventh innings to complete the comeback.
A week after falling 3-2 on the road to the Tigers, the Bulldogs were able to overcome a slow start offensively to finish with 10 hits getting a pair of doubles from senior Mason Grotto along with the eventual game-winning RBI double by senior Josh Lauck (watch).
Senior outfielder Nate Thimjon smacked his second home run of the season (watch) in the fourth inning with a two-run shot to left field.
On the mound, the 'Dogs used five pitchers with senior Oscar Carvajal earning his first win of the season tossing 1.2 innings allowing only one hit while striking out three. Exiting with two outs in the eighth inning, junior Robbie Peters came on for the final four outs to convert his first career save (watch).
How It Happened
The Tigers jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three-and-half innings scoring on an RBI groundout in the first, followed by two more in the second and a solo home run in the fourth gave Pacific its lead.
The 'Dogs refused to go away answering back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth as Grotto's first career double (watch) started the frame off and was followed by an RBI single by Ryan Higgins (watch). Thimjon followed with his two-run home run to cut the Tigers' lead to 4-3.
Higgins again came through in the fifth innng with an RBI single to drive home Jeff Jamison (watch) to knot the game at 4-4.
Scoreless innings in the fifth and sixth by right-hander Kyle Pruhsmeier and a scoreless seventh by Carvajal gave way to Lauck's two-out double in the bottom of the seventh that drove in pinch-runner Matt Ottino.
Pacific made one final attempt to tie the game bringing up the go-ahead run with two outs in the ninth, but Peters got Wyatt Hoffman to fly out to seal the win.
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On freshman catcher Tyler Davis getting his first career at-bats today....
"That is a really neat thing for him. He has been waiting his turn and he has been doing everything we want him to do. He has been paying attention and learning and now there is a decent chance he will be catching in some of these league games so we had to run him out there and get him some experience. He took a couple good swings and got on base once with the hit by pitch, handled it like a veteran.
