Bulldogs sweep singles play in 6-1 win over Falcons

FRESNO, Calif. — Fresno State claimed their first conference win of the year after defeating Air Force in its league opener on Sunday at Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center. The Bulldogs earned their 10th straight victory after the 4-2 win and improved to 12-2 overall (1-0 MW).

"We started off sluggish in the beginning but the team came together and earned today's victory," Fresno State head coach Luke Shields said. "Air Force is always a good team and well coached, and it's nice to get a win and get ahead in the conference."

How It Happened
Doubles
Air Force took the doubles point to begin the match, winning at the No. 2 spot against Aleksandr Myagkov and Angus Bradshaw, 6-1.

The 'Dogs took the No. 1 spot with a 6-1 win from the pairing of Dario Huber and Reece Falck, but a 7-6 loss at the No. 3 spot sealed the point for the Falcons.

Singles
After a loss in doubles, Fresno State more than made up for it in singles play. The Bulldogs' first victory came at the No. 5 spot with Alexey Aleschev winning 6-1, 6-0 to open things up.

Falck claimed the No. 6 spot 6-2, 6-2, and Bradshaw took the No. 3 spot shortly after with a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Myagkov then clinched the win by defeating Sean Mckendree in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6.

The final two matches were played out and resulted in a No. 1 spot victory from Zdenek Derkas 6-0, 6-2, 6-3, and a No. 2 spot victory from Huber, 7-5, 6-3.

The 'Dogs continue conference play this week, heading to New Mexico on Thursday with first serve scheduled for 11 a.m. PT.
