'Dogs drop high-scoring series finale

FRESNO, Calif. - The Diamond 'Dogs dropped a high-scoring series finale to San Diego State on Sunday at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium falling 21-14.
Fresno State (10-18, 7-11 MW) scored a season-high 14 runs and belted out 15 hits in the contest, but San Diego State (19-9, 14-7 MW) countered with 21 runs and 23 hits.
Five different Bulldogs registered multi-hit games with Ivan Luna, Emilio Nogales and Zach Presno each smacking three hits apiece while Andrew Kachel and Blake Wink notched two hits apiece.
Luna launched his first two home runs of the season and drove in three runs while Kachel hit his team-leading seventh home run.
Wink went 2-for-3 with a single, double, three RBI and scored a run while Nogales added two singles, a double and scored two runs.
On the mound, the 'Dogs had eight pitchers see action with left-hander Robbie Peters making his first career start in his 37th career appearance pitching one inning before giving way to Tommy Hopfe.
Cooper Bergman, Kyle Pruhsmeier, Kevin Larson, Alex Kendrick, Nik Cardinal and Treven Crowley rounded out the Bulldog hurlers.
How It Happened
SDSU got the scoring onslaught started in the top of the second with an RBI single, but the 'Dogs quickly responded with six runs in the bottom of the frame.
Luna got the offense started with a leadoff home run (watch) to right field followed by an RBI double by Wink (watch) and an RBI groundout by Ben Newton (watch) for a 3-1 lead. A walk to EJ Andrews, Jr. put a pair on base for Kachel who belted a three-run home run to right field (watch) for a 6-1 advantage.
The Aztecs got two runs back in the top of the third, but the 'Dogs increased their lead to 9-3 after three innings with three more runs in the bottom of the frame with an RBI double by Zach Morgan (watch), an RBI single by Wink (watch) and RBI sacrifice bunt by Newton (watch).
Three more runs for the Bulldogs extended the 'Dogs lead to 12-3 through four innings getting an RBI double from Ryan Higgins (watch), an RBI single by Presno (watch) and a sacrifice fly by Wink (watch).
A two-run home run by Aztec right fielder Jaden Fein, who finished the game 6-for-6 from the plate, in the top of the fifth cut the 'Dogs lead to 12-5, but the 'Dogs quickly answered back with a two-run home run by Luna (watch) to take back a nine-run cushion at 14-5.
Unfortunately, it was all SDSU from there as the Aztecs surged for 16 unanswered runs getting eight in the sixth, one in the eighth to tie the game at 14 and seven more in the ninth to complete the comeback win.
