'Dogs drop heartbreaker in series opener
4/23/2021 9:45:00 PM | Baseball
SAN JOSE, Calif. - Despite taking a one-run lead into the bottom of the ninth inning, the Diamond 'Dogs dropped a heartbreaking 5-4 walk-off loss to San Jose State at Excite Ballpark on Friday evening.
Fresno State (10-19, 7-12 MW) totaled six hits in the contest and took advantage of multiple San Jose State (4-7, 2-2 MW) miscues to take a 4-3 lead after scoring on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth.
Andrew Kachel went 2-for-4 from the dish smacking his team-leading eighth home run of the season (watch) and Ryan Higgins added a pair of singles.
Nate Thimjon notched a single and scored a run while Zach Presno scored the go-ahead run in the ninth (watch) on a wild pitch and drew a walk.
On the mound, Oscar Carvajal made his third start of the season tossing a season-high five innings limiting the Spartans to four hits, two earned runs and struck out four before giving way to southpaw Ixan Henderson.
The Fresno native matched his season high with three innings allowing five hits, one run and struck out three. Alex Kendrick saw action in the ninth suffering his second loss of the season allowing two hits, two runs and two walks.
How It Happened
The 'Dogs got the scoring started quickly with a solo home run from Kachel to right-center, but the Spartans answered back with a solo home run in the second by Jack Colette to knot the game at 1-1.
A pair of errors by the Spartans brought in two more runs for the 'Dogs in the fifth as Thimjon scored after a throw down to second base got away (watch) and Kachel capitalized on a error by Spartan right fielder James Shimashita (watch) allowing EJ Andrews, Jr. to score for a 3-1 lead.
A sacrifice fly by the Spartans in the bottom of the fifth by Ruben Ibarra cut the 'Dogs lead to 3-2 before tying the game at three scoring on a fielder's choice in the seventh.
Leading off the ninth, Presno struck out, but reached base after strike three got away from Spartan catcher Andrew Jurado. After swiping second, his first stolen base of the season, and moving to third on a groundout, he came home to score on a wild pitch by pitcher Darren Jansen.
With Kendrick on the mound in the ninth, Ibarra tied the game at four with a one-out solo home run. A single by Connor Konishi, an intentional walk and a walk loaded the bases with two outs for Jurado who was hit by a pitch for the walk-off win.
