FRESNO, Calif. – Returning home after two weeks on the road, Fresno State controlled Friday afternoon's game from start to finish in a 3-1 defeat of Nevada. It was the Bulldogs' first three-goal game since March 12.
The 'Dogs outshot the Wolf Pack 15-3 with 10 of those 15 being on frame. Kassandra Ceja, Ele Avery and Jordan Brown each found the back of the net for Fresno State.
The win moves the Bulldogs into a three-way tie for second in the West Division standings with 13 points.
How It Happened
Fresno State got on the scoreboard in the 12th minute. Ele Avery got free down the left flank, slid a low, hard cross to the near post that Kassandra Ceja fired past Kendal Stoval inside the right post. It was the freshman's third goal in the last three games.
The Bulldogs nearly doubled their lead in the 21st minute on header from Bailee Kern off a corner but Stoval was there for the stop. With less than two minutes before the half, Lorena Montanes rattled the crossbar on a shot from 20 yards out on a free kick that went up and over a Wolf Pack wall. Stovall managed to come up with the rebound to keep the Bulldogs' advantage at 1-0 at the break.
Shortly after having a good look at goal blocked, Avery's persistence for a goal paid off in the 54th minute. The senior stole a pass in the Wolf Pack defensive third, held-off and outran two defenders and slotted a shot to the right side past Stoval. Nevada pulled one back in the 66th minute. A foul along the right side of Fresno State's box set up Casey Crawford for a free kick. She found the head of Hana Law who placed the ball on the underside of the crossbar.
Entering the game in the for the first time in the 78th minute, Jordan Brown put the mach on ice for the Bulldogs in the 84th minute. With space out on the right flank, the junior neared the 18-yard box, eight yard from the endline, and ripped a shot that bent inside the far post.
