FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State softball team clinched the series win over Nevada with two shutout victories on Saturday afternoon at Margie Wright Diamond.
The Bulldogs (29-7, 13-1 MW) earned their fifth consecutive series win in conference play, and are in sole possession of first place. Fresno State posted two shutout wins over Nevada, defeating the Wolf Pack 3-0 in game on and 6-0 in game two.
At the plate, junior Vanessa Hernandez led the Bulldogs going 4-for-5 with one RBI and a .800 slugging percentage.
In the circle, Hailey Dolcini and Danielle Lung both recorded complete game shutouts. Dolcini notched 14 strikeouts in game one. Lung chalked two strikeouts in game two.
GAME ONE – Dolcini set the tone early for the Bulldogs retiring the side of the frame with three strikeouts. Keahilele Mattson built upon the momentum, sending a two-out solo shot over the left field fence for her eighth home run of the season.
The Bulldogs held a 1-0 lead through six innings before they tacked on two more runs. In the bottom of the sixth, back-to-back singles and two throwing errors would plate both runs.
In the tip of the seventh, Fresno State finished the game by retiring Nevada's batters in order.
Dolcini recorded her 12th shutout of the season and her 11th game with 10+ strikeouts. The senior remains a perfect 8-0 in conference play.
GAME TWO – The Bulldogs mirrored the first game, taking an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Kaitlyn Jennings hit a leadoff single and advanced to third off groundout. Hernandez brought in the run with a single to left field.
Fresno State extended its lead by plating two runs in the next inning. Miranda Rohleder opened the inning with a leadoff single, stole second and advanced to third on a groundout. Schuylar Broussard brought Rohleder home after hitting a base hit to center field. Jennings recorded the first extra-base hit of the game, sending an RBI double to center field.
Fresno State continued to add to its lead. The Bulldogs scored one run off three singles in the third, plated one in the fourth after capitalizing off of a drawn walk and two ground outs and scored the final run of the game in the fifth as Adrianna Noriega stole home.
The Wolf Pack put two runners on base to try to keep the game alive in the top of the seventh, but Lung and the defense stranded the runners to secure the shutout.
Fresno State earned its fifth straight shutout and 12th straight victory.
The Bulldogs will close the series against the Wolf Pack tomorrow at 12 p.m. PT.
