Bulldogs drop series finale in Vegas
4/3/2021 2:45:00 PM | Baseball
Fresno State (7-13, 4-8 MW) smacked three home runs on the day to finish with nine on the weekend getting two-run home runs by Andrew Kachel and Ryan Higgins and a solo home run by Nate Thimjon.
The 'Dogs totaled eight hits in the contest with Vinny Bologna coming off the bench with a pair of singles and scored a run.
On the mound, senior right-hander Jamison Hill worked 6.2 innings allowing six hits, six runs, four earned, struck out three and walked one.
Hill limited UNLV (11-7, 9-6 MW) to two hits and one run through his first six innings of work, but ran into trouble in the seventh allowing five runs, three earned on four hits as the Rebels plated six runs in the frame.
Will Springer and Tommy Hopfe, making his Bulldog debut, closed out the game getting the final four outs.
How It Happened
Scoreless through the first three innings, the 'Dogs got the scoring started with Kachel's two-run home run to right field in the fourth for a 2-0 lead. The Rebels broke up Hill's no-hit bid in the fifth with a solo home run from Myles Denson.
A leadoff home run in the seventh by Thimjon put the Bulldogs up 3-1, but UNLV quickly answered back with a six-run bottom of the seventh. An RBI double from Denson was followed by an RBI single and fielding error by the 'Dogs for two more runs and back-to-back doubles drove in three more runs to extend UNLV's lead to 7-3.
A leadoff walk to EJ Andrews, Jr. started the eighth for the 'Dogs and two batters later, Higgins drilled a two-run home run to left field to pull the 'Dogs within two at 7-5, but that was as close as the Bulldogs would get.
The Rebels answered back with two runs in the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run and an RBI double to take a 9-5 lead before the 'Dogs threatened to tie the game loading the bases with one out in the ninth, getting one run on a wild pitch, but were retired on strikes to close out the game.
