'Dogs drop hard-fought series finale
5/16/2021 5:45:00 PM | Baseball
FRESNO, Calif. - Despite bringing the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Diamond 'Dogs dropped their series finale to Nevada, 3-1 on Sunday at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
Fresno State (16-22, 13-15 MW), who kept Nevada (21-17, 18-9 MW) scoreless over the final seven innings, tallied seven hits from the plate, but were held to one run in the contest.
Ryan Higgins and Mason Grotto each tallied two hits apiece with Higgins picking up his team-leading 10th double of the season while Grotto drove in the 'Dogs lone run of the game.
On the mound, Oscar Carvajal made his fourth start and 14th appearance of the season going two innings allowing five hits, three runs, one earned and struck out one.
Freshman southpaw Ixan Henderson matched his season high with three innings limiting the Wolf Pack to one hit before Kyle Pruhsmeier tossed one inning.
Robbie Peters closed out the game tying his career high with three shutout innings holding Nevada to two hits and two strikeouts.
How It Happened
Nevada jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly in the first inning and added a pair of two-out RBI singles by Tyler Bosetti and Dillan Shrum in the second inning for a 3-0 lead.
With Shrum's RBI single barely missing being a three-run home run by mere feet, only one run scored as the 'Dogs were able to toss out Dario Gomez at home with an excellent relay throw from Ben Newton at shortstop.
The 'Dogs broke through on the scoreboard in the fourth with a two-out RBI single by Grotto (watch) as the Bulldogs took advantage of a Wolf Pack error in the outfield that allowed Zach Morgan to turn a single into advancing two more bases to end up at third.
With the hit, Morgan extended his hitting streak to 19 games and he has now reached base in 31 of 36 games this season.
The Wolf Pack looked to extend its lead in the sixth loading the bases with one out, but Pruhsmeier would get Peter Mendazona to bounce into a 5-2-3 double play (watch) to escape the jam.
Still trailing by a pair heading to the bottom of the ninth, Higgins led off with a double (watch) to left-center and Grotto singled to right (watch) to bring up the winning run, but a strikeout by Marco Pirruccello would end the game.
