'Dogs split twin bill against Rebels

FRESNO, Calif. - The Diamond 'Dogs split a doubleheader against UNLVÂ falling 13-2 in game one before winning the second game, 6-4Â on Saturday at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
Fresno State (18-23, 14-16 MW) was held to two runs and six hits in game one before exploding for six runs and 10 hits in game two.
The long ball was again a friend of the Diamond 'Dogs smacking a pair of solo home runs in each game to give Fresno State 50 home runs as a team this season.
Zach Morgan and Ivan Luna hit back-to-back jacks in game one and EJ Andrews, Jr. and Zach Presno each went deep in game two.
Ryan Higgins continued his hot hitting streak going 3-for-5 in game two with a pair of doubles, drove in an RBI and scored a run while Matt Ottino collected a pair of hits in game two, including his first triple of the season.
On the mound, Jamison Hill made the start in game one lasting 5.1 innings suffering his third loss while striking out five. He gave way to Tommy Hopfe, Treven Crowley, Julian Sotelo and Kevin Larson to close out game one.
Jake Dixon got the start in game two tossing five innings limiting UNLV (20-12, 15-11 MW) to four runs, one walk with five strikeouts.
Four relievers followed each working one inning apiece with Cooper Bergman, Kyle Pruhsmeier, Robbie Peters and Oscar Carvajal closing out the game. Pruhsmeier earned his second win and Carvajal picked up his fifth save of 2021.
How It Happened
Game one saw the Rebels take a 6-0 lead to the bottom of the seventh before the 'Dogs finally broke up the shutout bid with back-to-back home runs from Morgan (watch) and Luna (watch), but that would be all the offense they could muster as the Rebels tacked on seven more runs for the 13-2 victory.
The nightcap saw the Bulldogs offense get off to a quick start with a leadoff line drive home run by Andrews, Jr. (watch) and an RBI double to right-center by Higgins (watch) in the first inning for a 2-0 lead.
A four-run top of the fifth for the Rebels that included a bases-clearing RBI double put the visitors on top, 4-2, but the 'Dogs answered right back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by Emilio Nogales (watch) and Higgins scored on a wild pitch (watch).
A scoreless sixth gave way to the seventh with Pruhsmeier sending the Rebels down in order, Presno delivered the eventual game-winning run with a shot to left field (watch) and Andrew Kachel drove in an insurance run in the eighth (watch) for a 6-4 lead.
The Rebels threatened to make one last rally in the ninth loading the bases with a double and pair of walks, but Carvajal got Edarian Williams to strike out looking to end seal the win (watch).
