Haley Cavinder records third triple-double of the season.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Behind a triple-double from Haley Cavinder and a double-double from Wytalla Motta, Fresno State put a scare into New Mexico on Saturday afternoon but were unable to knock off the Mountain West's top team in hostile territory. Leading by nine at the half, the Bulldogs saw their lead dwindle in the second half before falling to the Lobos (16-4, 7-0 MW) 80-74 in a frenetic, high-paced game at The Pit.
After dropping a career-high 31 points in a her only other trip to Albuquerque in 2020, Haley left the court with her second triple-double in the last eight days, finishing with 21 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists. It was her third of the season. Wytalla Motta was on the end of several of those assists as the senior posted her second-straight double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Hanna Cavinder also chipped in 15 points and six assists on the afternoon.
How It Happened
The Lobos came out firing early, leading by as much as eight in the first quarter. Five points to close the period from Tamia Stricklin got the 'Dogs back within striking distance. The tide turned the Bulldogs way following an and-1 from Wytalla Motta with 7:35 remaining in the half. An 11-2 run ensued with a 3-pointer coming from each of the Cavinder twins that put Fresno State up 34-27 90 seconds later. Hanna Cavinder closed the half with seven points during a 7-2 run to give the 'Dogs their largest lead of the opening 20 minutes at nine, 47-38.
A baseline jumper from Motta to open the scoring in the third gave Fresno State its largest lead of the game. An 8-0 run by the Lobos then ensued. The run proved to be the difference in the period as the 'Dogs led by just three with 10 minutes to play. Less than three minutes into the fourth, LaTascya Duff handed New Mexico its first lead of the second half with a triple to go up 64-62. Daylee Dunn answered for the Bulldogs with one of her own from the corner.
But from that point, a few empty possessions for the 'Dogs led to nine unanswered points from the Lobos as they took a 71-64 advantage with 4:03 on the clock. Following a timeout, Haley Cavinder popped a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to four but Paula Reus, who had 19 points off the bench for New Mexico, answered with one of her own. Down nine with 90 seconds remaining, Haley brought Fresno State back within four, again, this time with just under a minute to play following five quick points. It was as close as the 'Dogs could get as the Lobos knocked down four free throws down the stretch.
